Im in for the 12th, it will be my 1st ocean yak fishing trip and can hardly wait.
ill be getting a new rod/ reel to suppliment my old penn, any advice on size,  make and especially line?
I like the look of the abu ambassadors, tho ill take 'yalls advice as long as its not cutting a hole in the bottom of my yak for a transducer mount(!). im budgeting for 125-150 for the reel, the less the better. thanx-Ben.

Hey ya'll,
I'm interested but not sure I can get the time off. However, If I could this would be my first try at salmon (and the WAF that goes with getting one) so I've got a couple of newbie questions. What is the basic tackle/method that is used and is there an additional stamp I need for my std ocean license? My setup is the basic crate/PVC tube on the back of my tarpon and I've got numerous tackle setups to choose from, I just need to know what's best/simplest for starting out. The only salmon fishing I've done is from shore in AK with pixies or trolling (powerboat) in socal with a deep diver/flasher/hoochie type setup.

Piscean: Don't know what's best, but last year, my rookie season, I caught some on a simple trolling rig- 8 0z mooching sinker(maybe a little heavier)( they are the banana-shaped ones with swivels or beads and an eye on each end) , 4 ft of 20lb  leader, watermelon, silver ,or green Apex lure(and bend, grind or file the barbs off the hooks).
I trolled about 2 K(hard to keep the speed down on nice days) by the gps, had no real idea how deep, but I had a lot of line out, maybe half the spool.    No matter what I trolled, and I used divers and flashers too, I got tangles if I didn't get up a head of steam before lowering rig.  I had a lot more tangles with flashers.  I had a  8ft Ugly Stick Tiger BWD 2200 ML rod and Tidewater 30L level wind conventional reel sold as cheap combo at West and other places.  Sometimes I could just leave it in freespool and set the clicker and it held the line from going out until a strike or snag or really big swell. When that didn't work, I set the clicker and loosened the drag way up. I just propped the rod across my left shin and under my right thigh  with the tip just out of paddle-whack reach and a couple feet off the water.I have now mounted a rod holder in front of me. It helped to have a rudder. Pole has a bendy tip but good backbone so it had a good but not severe bend with the mooching sinker rig.
I was glad I had a 27" wide net, but maybe that's not necessary, tho to be legal you need 18" dia at opening "landing net" which isn't defined by regs.

so is anyone launching on Saturday (1st) or Sunday? I'm itching to go but would rather have company = safety in numbers.

Mooch, I am interested in going out, but I am just worried about all the boats.  I would go out with someone who knows what average boat travel is.  I can go out either day this weekend if you need someone.
