In the last 20 years, there have been a half dozen GWS attacks in CA and all involved surfers or swimmers.

Wrong. Get your fax straight.  The rest of ur post... No, dude. Just no.
+1

I see that you're new to the site - welcome ! Facts do indeed go along way towards reinforcing your point on this site. Six people, including two kayakers, were attacked by GWS in CA in 2014 alone. Take a quick search of the Official GWS Thread on here and you can get a better idea of where and how often attacks/drive-by's/sightings actually happen.

I don't think Adam's point was about choosing to fishing the salt or to not fishing the salt. As we all know, if there's salt in tbe water, there are sharks nearby. I believe his point centered on taking a calculated risk however. Reputation or fact, some places are notoriously sharky. Bean Hollow being a prime example. Maybe this is a good analogy - we all have to park our car somewhere - would you rather park it in front of a liquor store in the Tenderloin or in a patrolled lot in Potrero Hill ? Point being, shit CAN happen in either place, but where is it more likely to happen ? Its all about calculated risk.

Hi, thanks for the welcome!  Yes, my info (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal,_unprovoked_shark_attacks_in_the_United_States) concerned only fatal shark attaks so it excluded all the other incidents like those two kayakers who were knocked out of their boats in 2014 near Vandenberg Airforce Base.  Luckily those kayakers were not injured.

Good analogy about parking your car in a safe place.

I look at the shark risk a little differently.  I grew up on a small island in Micronesia and saw sharks a lot.  Swam with them all the time, mostly spearfishing and using nets.  At first, I freaked out when I saw them in the water and thought I was going to die.  But the locals I was with told me to chill out.  After a while, I got used to them and even grew to like them.  If you spend time with them, you realize they are like dogs or any other large animal.  They might look dangerous but they have no interest in doing us harm.  The so called attacks are often not attacks at all, just a shark being curious and inadvertently scaring the heck out of a human.

The recent "shark attack" on surfer Mick Fanning in Australia is an good example.  Many are saying it was not an attack, just a shark checking things out.   Here is an article on that topic.   http://www.vox.com/2015/7/22/9016843/mick-fanning-shark-attack-video

I totally understand why people are afraid of sharks.  I was too and the only way that stopped was by spending lots of time with them in the company of locals who knew to how to handle them.  The local Marshallese people say it is dangerous to be afraid of sharks because they key in on it, so better to understand them and relax.

Good outlook bofish.  You Just will not find many folks willing to just hang out with these GWS's.  A just checking you out could easily make you a chew toy.

Bofish, do you not realize that at least 6 of our members have been attacked by GWS?

Your lame coconut statistic might hold true for residents of North Dakota or Arizona, but those statistics don't mean shit to those of us who are out in the ocean 25 to 30 times a year. I have one friend who has been in a serious car accident. I have four friends who have been attacked by sharks.

And reef sharks are nothing like GWS.

Like others have mentioned...get your facts straight.

You are 30 times more likely to be hit by lightening than attacked by a shark.
More likely to get hit by a semi, too.  But the stats change depending upon your actions.  Changes of getting run over by a semi go way up if you were to stand on the middle of 101.

Yeah man, I been to Kwaj and reef sharks in the Marshall Is are NOT the same as GWS in these waters! I appreciate where you're coming from...but you are off base. There are only like 1000 active members on NCKA and in the 10yrs I've been a member, at least 6 kayakers have been attacked by GWS. That is a 1.6% chance of getting hit by a shark, if you're a member of NCKA. (and 1000 active members is a pretty liberal estimate; it's probably lower) It's fine if you're not "scared" of sharks, but don't discredit or trivialize the experiences these guys went through. Plus it bad karma to disrespect sharks brah!

Odds of death by swordfish are infinitesimally small.  Only 5 reported cases in the medical literature of any swordfish-induced trauma.
And yet . . .

Show anyone and bet them not to LOL :smt005 Multiple reasons why its a crowd pleaser

1. Skipper hopscotching his way over the transom, arms flailing wildly
2. Deckhand dancing like a drunken bizotch, hands all over the fighting chair as if he was spinning EDM tunes at Club Tao in Vegas.
3. Haole $hitting his pants watching Skipper go MOB into the distance, as Deckhand grabs n screams, and the fish just out of Haole field of view

and last but not least . . .

4. They each thought it 10^8 times more likely they'd be killed by falling coconuts than attacked by a killer billfish

Hello Bofish,

The GWS congregate at Ano Nuevo Island during the Elephant Seal breeding season.  Please don't try what you just mentioned here. If do you're going get bitten in half. You can check their presence at topp.org.

One other thing to consider is being checked out while fishing solo. Your kayak is sinking with holes, help is not minutes away, and you are now in the water with what "checked" you out. Not necessarily death by chew, but still death
