Bean Hollow sounds like a dangerous place.  I looked into the danger of shark attacks and wanted to share what I found.

I can only find one recent record of a GWS attacking (and harming) a kayaker in CA.   That occurred in Malibu in 1989.  In the last 20 years, there have been a half dozen GWS attacks in CA and all involved surfers or swimmers.  But this has not stopped people from surfing and swimming in CA. Today, for example, Kim Chambers is swimming from the Farallon Islands (GWS habitat) to San Francisco in nothing but a bathing suit.  Is she crazy or does she recognize that the fear of GWS might be overstated?

Turns out that it is more dangerous to drive a car or fly on an airplane.  You are 30 times more likely to be hit by lightening than attacked by a shark.   Digging sand holes at the beach is more dangerous than going in the water.   A recent study found that 13 people were injured by sharks in a given year, while 200,000 were hurt in accidents involving ladders, toilets and chainsaws.

All those stats are thrown out the window if you are one of the few that have been attacked or harassed by a GWS.

My wife's odds are zero compared to mine but she refuses to go on or in the ocean.

+1

I see that you're new to the site - welcome ! Facts do indeed go along way towards reinforcing your point on this site. Six people, including two kayakers, were attacked by GWS in CA in 2014 alone. Take a quick search of the Official GWS Thread on here and you can get a better idea of where and how often attacks/drive-by's/sightings actually happen.

I don't think Adam's point was about choosing to fishing the salt or to not fishing the salt. As we all know, if there's salt in tbe water, there are sharks nearby. I believe his point centered on taking a calculated risk however. Reputation or fact, some places are notoriously sharky. Bean Hollow being a prime example. Maybe this is a good analogy - we all have to park our car somewhere - would you rather park it in front of a liquor store in the Tenderloin or in a patrolled lot in Potrero Hill ? Point being, shit CAN happen in either place, but where is it more likely to happen ? Its all about calculated risk.

Well said.

Except some are going to say I would sell the car.

Exactly ! I don't think Adam was telling people to sell the car, but think carefully about where you park it.

I personally don't get people posting hook-ups and reports on BH. Think about who might be reading your posts. I've seen more than a few people there who had no business going out there. The day Adam got hit 2 women came down and one of them launched even though we just told them about a shark attack. It was their first time there, and they seemed inexperienced. Where do you think they heard about BH?

That said, I still go out there even with the image of Harry, about 100' away, getting launched like eff-ing rag doll by a ~17 footer, etched in my memory. I did stop going certain times of the year and certain conditions I wont go out at all (my personal BH rules). Do the research, know the history, build up your skillz (besides sharks, BH can have a nasty shorebreak) before you even think about it.

Hopefully when this whole thing comes up again next year, there have been no attacks...end of rant

Haha, dude remember that?  Those two drunk ladies asked what happened and we said,"white shark attacked our buddy, like 40' of water"  she says, " well, he's probably gone now right?"  10 minutes later they were fishing right out of the mouth.  Amazing  :smt009

I got my facts here from Wikipedia: List of Fatal, Unprovoked Shark Attacks in CA
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal,_unprovoked_shark_attacks_in_the_United_States

The info I was looking at concerned fatalities only.

This map  (http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Map-Fatal-Shark-Attacks-Off-California-Coast-296415871.html) shows that only four people have died from shark attacks in the Bay Area since 1900.  That last one in 1984.   The map could be wrong - I have not verified the data.  But it is consistent with the studies showing that the odds being killed by a shark are incredibly remote - 1 in 250 million.  You are more likely to be killed by a falling coconut.
