This is my own opinion about Bayside so let it be. I went fishing on Monday at SC and ran into some of the NCKA guys. It is my opinion that the guy at Baysidemarine is a SHADY person. Let me explain.  "Come to SC and get your limits of Halibut!" BTW: you can get it if you buy my Fresh Squid for $20. (he probably uses old post/pictures)

FACT: The day i went out, short of Fish Flogger, who landed a small legal, I didn't hear any who caught something before the wind picked up. Miraculously the Baysidemarine guy lands limits on that day..???ok...he's a good fisherman sure... This isn't the first time.

Second - I usually go to bayside to pick up my parking permit for the day for 5 bucks, on that day he told me it was raised to $10. He wasn't sure why it just was. I believed him, payed my $10, but later checked my facts. I went to the harbor master to ask them to verify the rates for parking. They told me it was $6 for kayaks and that there hasn't been a rate change. :smt010

Ok, I apologize if I'm wrong, but this is my experience. You can probably get better quality squid else ware and for a much cheaper price.   "There is always a chump to be had, don't let it be you" L.A.

Hi Yakers:

I buy my Squid at Ranch99. I never buy Tackle Dock side because
of the Markup. Good bait can be had at the small  boat Launch next to the
Coast Guard West Harbor.

Well,   I read that earlier and been thinking about it all day.      Could be the guy just made a mistake ?  A new guy at the register?  It happens.

I've been going there many years now and never had any problems or issues... except they don't open till 8 am before salmon season.   :smt003
A few days ago they had  fresh dead squid.. it goes bad fast, so either they sold it all or dumped it because of aging problems.
I bought some bait, tackle, etc   $ 21.25     The guy handed me back 3.75 in change from a twenty.        I pointed out his error and we had a laugh.      The guys there are always in tune to where and what's hitting.   If anything they under report the catch.
    We all make mistakes.

Bait next to the Coast Gaurd ???      I know where the CG is,   but who sells bait on that side ?

Santa Cruz is filled with shady people period! :smt003........        Really ?

Hi BM:

I catch my Bait using a Sabiki rig at the small Boat Ramp. Boccio Boy nets
the same bait in the general area. The ramp is right next to "The Velocity"
It's easy and a lot of fun for Kids. :smt001
                                                                                      Good Luck

Sorry for your experience Anchovy. It has been a looong winter.

I've had my own issues with Bayside, and I've been frequenting the harbor for more than 10 years. Sometimes they are the only option though, and they do carry what is needed.

As for the fish counts, its always in the best interest of the 'industry" to make the fishing look great at all times, just like Stagnaros, or WON, or any other voice that has a stake in selling stuff to fishermen. The trick is figuring out how to use the info they give to your advantage.

Bayside has a lock on the market in the area, and they have been there a long time. You can't write off any info/tips/hints you get there, but you just have to distill it and to get the nuggets of real info.

Ya been going to sc harbor for ever.  Last time ( a week or so ago) went to bayside for my parking pass.  Yep $10.00 and they would only take cash for it...Hummm...Then at the ramp the harbor master says I need a cartop launch pass for 6.00.  I told him I had a parking pass and he said he would ticket me if I didn't get a launch pass.

So no more parking passes needed, just get the 6.00 cartop launch and your good to go. Ya, I paid 16.00 that day for no reason..  :smt010

Oh and his fresh dead squid looks pretty bad to me. Maxim market right accross the street from Fishermans wherehouse in san jose is the place to get squid...

Hella cheap and pretty dam good...

Honestly guys, I'm sure it was a misunderstanding, but it sure rubbed me the wrong way. I guess you can treat customers anyway you want when you got a lock on the market.  Lesson learned - Don't pay $10 dollars for a parking pass at Bayside. Get the launch pass directly from the harbor master for $6 save yourself $4 bucks, the hassle and probably a ticket.   :smt005 L.A.

Not going to weigh in on BS Marine, but I will offer you a tip:

Launch from the free hand launch ramp on the other side of the harbor, which is also used by light sailboats and such. Parking there is metered, but there is always parking on the street close to ALDOs restaurant. So drive down, stage your yak, park your car, and enjoy the fishing. Frozen squid is cheap...live bait rarely is.

Good luck
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

It hasn't been a secret in a long time, if ever.  And it's still never crowded.
