I like to give special thanks to HamachiJohn, Dpshim, G-Whiz, Fish Master1, and BigJim for sharing their fishing knowledge with me, to get me started.  Also Bill for hooking me up on the jigs, when I bought the anchor.  This is my first time kayak fishing (joined NCKA 1yr 1mo ago, LOL), and wanted to share the experience with my wife and son on Mother's Day weekend.  (honestly, I was way minus on WAF points, like in the RED ZONE, LOL)

I preloaded all the kayak/fishing gear from the night before, as I knew that waking up at 5am with the family was going to be a task.  We scramble to grab the spare clothes/food and jumped in my G6, and took off.  On the way up, the wife and kid fell fast asleep, LOL~!!
We arrive to SWS and find the parking lot semi full of all the Monterey Bay Triton folks prepping to enter the water.   I dump my stuff on shore and take off to find a parking spot near the entrance.  (it was already 1/2 full by then)  I wake up my wife and son and help them get suited up and off we go.

I felt confident w/o a fish finder, as I knew what it looked like in the areas that I freedove in, what the structure was below.  We get to the first spot and prep the pole.  My wife said we had squid the night before but there was none that morning.  Luckily we had abalone trimmings in the freezer, so I just ended up taking those.  I had no clue what the heck I was doing, luckily the small tackle box I received from Bill had three jigs already setup.  I tied the yellow fish looking one, and put a long piece of abalone on the hook.  (stuck my finger, ouch)  I bust out a little manual I had from Ly's fishing store on how to tie the jig to the line.  I get a hit, but when I pulled up, it snags on the kelp, with no fish....

I end up cutting the jig free and  putting the squid looking one on the line from the tackle box.  Instead of putting a big slice of abalone, I cut a smaller piece.  I redrop the line and let the wife and son give it a go.  Wife starts to complain that her feet and legs are cold, so I suggest that we turn in.  She gives me a look and says, "we need at least one fish before we turn in" WOOT,  no wonder I love her so much.  As my 4yr old son looks off in the distance, and emulates the sound of a sea lion... we just kick up our feet and enjoy the calm waters.

I grab the fishing pole and bobbed it  like I was told and something bit it.  Then it would stop moving and bounce again or so I thought.  It then stopped movement, and I thought I lost it, so I pull up the line to try to go to another area and lo and behold there was a fish on it.  I assume that I had it hooked the whole time and I was just tugging at it that whole 3 mins, since I had no sense of feel.  LOL, out of excitement, I forget to turn on the GoPro, until I had it out of the water.
I tell my wife that we should go back in, since I didn't want her catching a cold before I go on a business trip, but she insisted that she could hang for about 20 more minutes.  WOOT!! damn, she must be expecting a coach bag or LV.  (I think I am just going to tell her to get what she wants, and do not show me the bill, hHAHAHA)  I drop the line 2 more times and wait, then I said, "lets start to move in."  I drop it one final time and it hits as it reached the bottom.  WTF, this sucker is pulling my line, I was like DAYAMN its a big one.  Or well I thought it was because it fought back, compared to my first one.  PUHAHAHHAAH  Pulled it up to be 15", thank goodness for the hook1 hog trough.

I tell my wife that we have to go in now... I really don't want her feeling uncomfortable, plus my son was happy we caught a pirate fish.  (if I didn't say they were pirate fish, he wouldn't let me catch them, such a ocean advocate from hanging out at monterey bay aquarium)  Yeah, you guessed it... pirate abalone, pirate urchins, pirate argh!!!!

We get back to shore and pack up and take a final picture.... what a friggin wonderful day!!!!

Please excuse me coughing throughout the video.. LOL   Also all the korean that I spoke, you can pretty much guess what I am saying though.. LOL

Please give me constructive criticism, as I am still learning the ropes.  I would like to be prepared for halibut/wsb soon!! LOL

WTG, Team Chaeki !!
Funny how "We got one!" sounds the same in any language.   :smt044
Look forward to fishing with you this year.

next time, grab the fish by its lower lip and grab the hook using the pliers to unhook it.

Btw, what reel did you end up buying?

What a great family outing!  Pirate fish...ha, ha.  I know what you mean about the Monterey Bay Aquarium...they do a good job at giving me a guilt trip every time I visit that place......

Congrats on your first yak fishing trip, Chaeki! That's awesome how you took your whole family out, too.

I recommend getting a hawg trough, or even drawing measurements on the side of your kayak so that you can quickly and easily measure fish.

Also, when you bring the fish to the surface try not to lift it from the water with the line. If it's not hooked well it could shake off more easily.

YEAH!!!!!

Nice job bro!!!!

Nothing better than a good shared time with the family!!

Rick has some good advice....my 2 cents is get that fish in the yak with you and grab it or lip grip it and then once you know you want to keep it, clip that booger up ASAP!! You don't wanna have a nice fat RF or cabbie or Ling flopping around next to your yak and getting away!!!

That clip will go through their eyes just as well if they won't open their mouth for ya!!
 :smt002
Congrats again bro and thanks for sharing!!

Sincerely,

Jim

I would like to thank you all for your feedback, I will definitely remember and use it out on the water on my next crazy adventure.  LOL

G-Whiz:  fish finder?  I told you my face mask works the same, stick head in water, see fish, drop line.  LOL *soon*

hamachijohn:  I was a little kid in the candy store at the Ly's... I picked up a shamino trevela rod, and a shamino tyrnos reel (put it on the NON-joint credit card, unless I say happy mothers day here is your fishing pole, but not sure how that would come across??!?!?! lol)

floatsam: I don't know what they are feeding them fish in the aquarium, but I would pay 100 bucks if they would let me spearfish in their tank for 15mins.  LOL

rick: little brother, thank you for your advice.  I bought the hawg trough at the same time I bought my scotty rod flush mounts from hook one.  I had the GoPro turned off, as I was doing a balancing act of having my wife reach in the front hatch, grabbing the trough and then pushing it back to the center hatch.  It slid to the front, but I will take your advice and just secure it on the topside of the kayak... THANKS!!! I think will also get a kitchen mat for the inside, so things do not move inside the kayak.

bigjim:  do you know how hard it is for me to stick the eyes?  it took me a month to just stab it with a knife in the head.  I'm a wussy.... I have that issue when I see blood, that I want to pass out syndrome... LOLOLOL  I will just bite my lip and do it next time.. *puke*

banjotoad:  the rigging worked out nice, its similar to the Malibu XL 2 anglers addition.  For a solo rider, riding the middle, things were all out of the way.  When riding tandem, as long as you are aware of the rods you are fine.  I eventually realized that turning the rod around to have it face the back side, it then had no problems with my wife clipping the rod.

Again, thanks for all the feedback... You know when your addicted... when you wake up every hour of the night, to see the replies on your phone with the contrast turned down low so you don't wake up your wife with the blaring light.  LOL
