I know I am in the minority but I have owned every lip gripper and swear by the Boga. The knock offs like Berkeley don't hold up to saltwater and are prone to mechanical failures and the plastic lip grippers can't be used hands free. The hands free issue is particularly important when landing big fish on a yak. The Boga is bullet proof and will last for years, has an accurate scale and the shaft spins which is great for big lings doing the death roll. In addition you can use it as a fish wacker. Like many things, it costs more to buy a high quality American made product, but worth the investment IMHO.

Great bass, where did you buy your boga?

Jedmo, ahahahahh you spotted that.  I figured I needed the radio in reach, her PFD was just in the right location, with a nice strap that held well... Lol, she didn't even notice.  Thank goodness she doesn't watch my videos.....

The pole was long, so I had my wife hold it as I was getting the fish closer, I should of just left the line out and hold the pole up to get it closer to me... lol
What you are describing is called "high sticking", and while it works for smaller fish, its a good way to break a rod. Even smaller fish that suddenly wake up at the surface can break a tip by flapping. We all do it sometimes. Your Shimano is tough and supple and will take quite some high sticking before it breaks.
One way to get around high sticking is "low sticking". Grab your rod somewhere between the reel and tip near the balance point, and then hold it above and slightly behind your shoulder. It's a little awkward but with some practice, effective.

Scott is right about the boga.  I had a berkeley and had a nice fish start spinning at the surface.  The boga swivels, so the fish would spin. The berkeley doesnt so what happened is that the fish literally broke its jaw, and came off.  The pisser was that I was using the gripper to release the fish.  Instead it probably died.  Bought a boga the next day.  Pricey but divide it by the total number of fishing days over the years to come, and its a bargain.

Great bass, where did you buy your boga?

I bought mine at Cabelas when they had one of their free shipping for >$100. They are fair traded so I have never seen them on sale. Get the middle sized one (130 - 30#) for saltwater. Fisherman's Warehouse probably sells them too. I would get the FF next though. A FF is really helpful. You also need a big net to be legal OTW.

For the kelp anchor leash, use a short rope or bungee. Sometimes when the WX goes bad or you get a big fast moving fish and you want to be able to release the anchor quickly.

Sharky is right about high-sticking. Not a good landing technique, even with small fish. Sharky described the proper technique. With big fish especially halis, back off the drag by 50% when you get the fish to the surface. If things go bad with the gaff, net or boga and the fish goes crazy, you wont get broken off or have the rod pulled out of your hand.

Here is a ling on the boga from Saturday. Caught him on a clouser minnow which I designed and rolled.

Someone at GS5 will have to show me how to low stick it, I can't visualize the technique. Lol

I went to the Boga website, it ain't no joke on the price.  Will have to wait for fathers day on that and a fish finder.

Fish finder on a Malibu xl 2, anyone see how that mods? I was thinking of  a rudder kit also, if they make one for my kayak.

Nice picture great bass 2!!!
