Good stuff, Chaeki - having the family on the water is an admirable effort.   :smt001

Great vid Chaeki! We have similar paths to the madness. I bought a tandem last year for the family and soon discovered how fun it was to dive and fish from. Look forward to meeting everybody up at GS5!!! :smt006

Congrats on the fish and sorry we didn't cross paths yesterday. We fished outside from 630-1130. Love the video. Here are some tips:

1. The WX was marginal yesterday with a small boat advisory. Although SWS is protected probably not the best day for a family thing.

2. Your kelp anchor has a long leash. You may want to shorten it so you can reach the anchor or put a quick release connector on it.

3. As Jonathan mentioned, thumbing the lip works well except for lings or halis where a boga works better.

4. Most folks put the reel in freespool with the clicker off and drop to the bottom and jig it for awhile then work your way back up to the surface unless you are targeting suspended fish.

5. For small cabbies and lings, usually you measure them before clipping them. I believe your second fish was a cabbie.

See you out there.

Chaeki, I loved the video! Your family, especially your son, was so adorable :D I was stoked when ya told me that you and your family caught some fish, wtg hyung! :D

Next time you and your family come for another fishing outing, lemme know. Since my gf got seasick last time when I took her out beyond Pescadero Pt, I'd be happy to bring her along to make up for last outing and guide y'all on a nice fishing trip. And I will make sure we stay inside the cove where it's more protected :)

I hope that you made up some WAF pts hyung, and please tell your wife happy mother's day for us all :D

Chaeki,

So happy to see you with your family fishing and actually catching some fish for dinner.  That was great.

Thanks for the great info... 1. yeah, I would never enter if it looked bad, but it was nice in the cove.  Better than the days that I speared there. LOL  2. how would I shorten it? use a smaller rope? I used a dog leash from REI... lol.   3. where can I get a good deal on a boga?  (just googled it to see what it was, lol)  4. THATS WHAT THE CLICKER IS FOR, I was wondering why it didn't just drop.  LOL  5.  Yeah, I totally agree, measure first, clip after.  I was just in a panic mode, since I wasn't sure what I was doing.

The pole was long, so I had my wife hold it as I was getting the fish closer, I should of just left the line out and hold the pole up to get it closer to me... lol

My wife is as bad as me in getting sea sickness, so I gave her scopace (pill) and she enjoyed not getting sick.  I will take you on your offer for fishing!!!! I am glad that I can take out the family, because spearfishing, I would go solo.

BUT the funniest part of the event was when my wife said, " would it be faster if you went down and speared the fish...."  then I told her... BUT YOU TOLD ME NOT TO BRING MY SPEARGUN STUFF>> Y(#&*A%(@*&$(*@#&

While a boga is nice, really nice actually, you can get away with one of these for a fraction of the cost.  If you've got the money, go boga, but if money is tight, this is what a lot of people use.  And it floats!

The floating plastic fish grip is the way to go...I have a boga and a fish grip, and the boga stays at home!!!

This is the kelp clip I use...works great for me both off the dive board and yak!!

Cool to see you bringing the family out there bro!

Send me a PM if you want to go out and get some "practice" in before the next time you bring your wife out!

great fishing report and video.  enjoyed watching it so much.  thanks chaeki.

the plastic lipgrips work great for small and decent size fish but not ideal for big fish like 30"+ ling and hali.  i have seen the plastic ones break.  there are metal ones that are not as expensive as boga.  berkeley makes decent quality lipgrips at reasonable price.

I thought it was a new kelp bed fishing technique when you started to teach your wife and son fishing that way   :smt003 :smt044

HAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHHAH I don't think I can go back and tell my wife... LOL too embarrassing...
As for the lip grip, gonna pick up one of those and then research the other one for bigger fish.  Anyone know if fishermans warehouse has that lip grip, to avoid shipping costs...?

I saw BigJim's kelp clip, its nice... I think I even have all the parts to modify mine to be similar... gonna try that first before I drop more cash... LOL
