The main problem I see is from a conservation standpoint.  Part of what we preach in diving is selectivity... shooting only what you want & no bycatch.  I'm a bit worried that too many species would cause people to shoot fish they ordinarily wouldn't take for the sake of points.  It's an internal battle I strugle to reconcile with myself when it comes to tournaments.   :smt011

Unlike AOTY, we can't catch&release our entered fish.  As such, I'm inclined for this year to have a couple events for prizes... maybe coinciding with events like the Big Ab Big Ling tourney, the SCAN event, Cencal tournaments, etc.

We can also keep records AOTY-style.  Fish should be photo'd on a hawg trough & we can use that data in the future (i.e. 2012) to create point modifiers.  Maybe have a NCKA records section.  ;)

Lots of possibilities... hard to figure out what's best for logistics, members, & our resources.

All good points Harold.

I'm down for whatever. You let us know how you want to proceed and if you want any help and I am sure we will all be willing to do whatever is needed to make it happen, however it happens!

Thanks again for not participating!

i agree with some of that, I dont really want a perch for dinner or points.... I got my 2 and i am done with em :)

Im a total rookie though, my choices are very limited as it is, othr then that, the usual suspects are great for dinner.

but i agree...

One award I'd like to institute is a Meritorious award for best catch/story/etc.

Basically, it's not limited to the size of the fish... but also the rarity of the fish, difficulty compared to skill of diver, pictures, method of capture, story that goes along with it, the report (mandatory), etc.

At the end of the year, the winner will be determined by peer-judging.

For example, I go out & shoot a 15# ling with my speargun.  Post a few pictures & a report.
-vs-
Porky goes out and fights 10ft swells... throws up multiple times... then goes down with a polespear with a broken band & stabs/lands a 10# ling.

Hands down, peer judging would give Porky the award.   :smt004

I think it'd be fun & encourage members to post reports.   :smt001

It's not about the size of the fish one shoots... it's all the intangibles that make a day of diving a success.

As a peer, I would also think there should be additional points for the quality of the party after my boy Porky bags that Ling!!!

this is an awesome start to a nice setup of some friendly competition and like Big J said

" the after party is where its at"  Like my old man always said, there are no such thing as a fishing trip.  Its a beer drinking trip and you fish to pass the time.  cant wait to get this thing up and running

Not to  be nit picky but it is called the Norcal Underwater Hunters Big ab comp and cook off SCAN fundraiser and benefit, every one call's it the SCAN event which is bothersome cause NCUH put a ton of work and effort in it ! but all that matters is money is raised for a great organization.

"Norcal Underwater Hunters Big ab comp and cook off SCAN fundraiser and benefit"

I think its cause SCAN is the easiest to spot and remember out of all that text.....

Your efforts appreciated Matt, 100%

my two cents - Since Fuzz is a long time NCKA member, a well respected free diver in the dive community, a big contributer to NCKA and a moderator. Let's have him ultimately decide on what's best for NCKA - AND NOBODY ELSE!

Like Harold had mentioned,
Quote
"When it comes down to it... that's why we do it - because it's fun."

Looking forward to this even and I'm hoping to be in better condition so I can participate. But either way, I'd be happy to show support!
