Just a quick update!

I ran 18 miles on my own in Bakersfield last Saturday...took it easy on the first 10 miles or so and then cranked it up to get it over with and finished the 18 in 3 hours and 4 minutes before it got too hot out!!

 

Just got an email from our Team in Training Manager and thought I would share these excerpts with you all:

FUNDRAISING CORNER:  Our Santa Cruz Marathon Teams are rocking!  Together, our walk and run teams have raised over $98,000!  That means we have raised enough to fund 2 research fellows for a year at Stanford.  We are just $2K away from the magical $100K mark – a feat that our teams have not reached for several seasons.  You all are going to be the ones to put us over the top.  Congratulations to all our athletes who have not only crossed the finish line, but have also continued to raise valuable funds for patients and researchers!!

WHERE DOES MY MONEY GO?: LLS receives no federal funding. Because of the continued support of you and our partners and sponsors, in fiscal year 2010 we were able to:

·         invest $72 million, which includes funding for 103 new grants to researchers in academic institutions and $8 million in contracts through the LLS Therapy Acceleration Program

·         support 347 research projects in the United States, Canada and 9 other countries

·         provide financial assistance to patients

·         sponsor scientific conferences around the country

·         produce educational materials and videos

·         run dozens of Family Support Groups nationwide

THANK YOU once again for all of your help and support...I truly believe this a great cause and a fight that is worth fighting...my training and fundraising for the Marathon in Alaska on June 18th are almost done, but the search for a Cure for Cancer is not over...YET!!!

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to AbKing/BlackAb/LoletaEric for donating a $1000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society from the GS5 proceeds!!!!!

 

Team ShickenMooch and the Santa Cruz Chapter of Team in Training have been kicking butt training and fundraising (over $99,000 since January!!!) and this donation is INCREDIBLY appreciated and I personally feel very honored and validated that Eric recognizes what an important, worthy cause this is.

I did my best at GS5 to put my appreciation into words, and hope that my little speech did justice to how grateful I feel and how committed I am to keeping on fighting to try and find a CURE for this f*#king disease that has affected so many of us in so many different ways.

Thank you once again Eric, and all who have donated, helped, or written a supportive PM/Post or shared an encouraging word.

Had a hard track workout on Thursday which ended with a surprise timed mile...in two months my time improved from 8:10 to 7:33!!
 
Then dove hard all day Friday and spent enough time chilling in the sun afterwards to get a little burnt and hungover!
 
Saturday AM woke up at 5am to go run 15 miles, then off to a birthday party in Hollister at noon and then another one in San Jose at 2PM!

Little tired and sore today!!

Just found this thread and watched your vid bro...saw all those high fives you were giving, my question is did u leave a wake of "BigJims Handshake clup" in your wake  J/k...  Your Truly am Inspiration to all those that know YOU and even those that don't!!!  And Go Get um Bro.... Way To Be Who You Are!!!  And it always hurts when u leave.....   If I wasn't a busted up logger from wayyyy back...I'd love to do some of those runs...I'm with Porky though riding a bike fits my busted up body more........

I found out this week that one of my NWKA friends is supposed to get a second bone marrow transplant in his fight against Lymphoma.   That certainly hits home.  You're fighting the good fight Jim ... THANK YOU!!!

Allen, I would be more than happy to put his name on my race day jersey and run in his honor....

The Mayor's Marathon will be on June 18th and I like to put the names of the people I am running in honor and memory of on my jersey so I can take them with me on the run....

To be honest, I really get a lot of strength and motivation from these names and when I start feeling tired and sorry for myself I think about WHY I am running and WHO I am running for and it helps me keep putting one foot in front of the other.
