YUP, come up with the $800 and I'll match it with roundtrip flights to Anchorage for BigJim.  When you make a donation, please remember to add a comment to BigJim letting him know you are an NCKA member so he can keep track.

GO TEAM MOOSHICKEN!!!

-Allen

Just wanted to report back that NCKA has donated $500 so far to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society via Team ShickenMooch!!!!!!!!!

 :smt007 :smt007 :smt007 :smt007

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every dollar DOES add up and DOES really make a difference!!

Here are some examples of how the $$ donated can make a very real difference:

$1000 supports one weeks salary for a medical researcher at UCSF, Stanford, or Berkeley who may discover key information to developing curative treatments for blood cancers.

$500 provides a blood cancer patient with financial assistance for one year.

$500 allows 10 patients to log on to a webcast and hear the latest information in treatment for their disease.

$200 provides a Family Support Group Program for one year for a patient and their family.

$150 allows 5 patients to make a First Connection with a trained peer volunteer.

$100 provides 3 patients access to an information teleconference.

$75 is the average cost of tissue typing to become a bone marrow donor.

$50 is the cost of a CT scan

$40 is the cost of sending a comprehensive packet of information for children with cancer.

$35 pays for transportation expenses for a patient living in Northern California ’s most rural areas to treatment at a comprehensive cancer center.

$25 covers a single prescription co-payment.

$5 is the cost of sending a newly diagnosed patient information about support and their disease.

This means more services for patients. It means more funds toward a cure. It means hope!

Also...remember that for every $10 donated I will put a raffle ticket with your name on it in the drawing we are doing for a brand new 32 gb WiFi Ipad!!!

 :smt003

$300 more and Allen will provide the roundtrip airfare to Alaska!!   :smt004

Quick update on the three Team ShickenMooch members:

My training has been going very well and my back is feeling better each day! We are doing a nice 8 mile run this Saturday and then the runs start increasing by 2-3 miles each week from here on out....

Miguel "Speedy" Orejel has the goal of completing the 26.2 miles in under 4 hours, and when I see how fast and strong he already is I have no doubt he can do it!!

My Dad is back to his training schedule after a scary experience where he ended up in the ER with Atrial Fibrulation and they had to shock his heart to get it back into a nomal rhythm...he is still committed to coming up and doing the full Marathon, sampling Alaskan micro-brews and catching his first Halibut!!  :smt001

Thanks again to all of NCKA for their support, to those that have donated, to those that have sent encouraging messages and to Allen for the very generous offer!!

Sincerely,

Jim

Update:

Had a brutal Hill workout last night: cycles of running uphill and jogging back down of 5 different methods: run, run/bound, sprint, run backwards, grapevine....6 sets...felt like I was gonna puke after 4!! Think I was still sweating out the partying from last weekend!!!!  :smt002 :smt003 :smt005 :smt044

Tomorrow will be running 2 hours and 30 minutes...doing time instead of distance training this time around....the course is set up for 12 miles, but imagine I will probably end up running more like 14:

http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/29897072

Will be cold and wet tomorrow for sure, but will think of Joel and Marv to keep me going.

Quote from my Coach Ed Paco that I thought you guys might dig:

"When you're wet and you're cold and you're feeling tired and sore, remember to tell yourself, "It could be worse. Suck it up, cupcake." You only have to look across the Pacific Ocean to be reminded of true difficulty. Run because you're strong. Run because you can. Run because this is your time to make a difference."

If you want to come drink some coffee and watch the waves tomorrow AM, come on out and cheer me on!!

Yep!

Cold, rainy, hail storms, gusty winds, puddles and rivers in the streets, soaking wet shoes and clothes!!!

Worth every second of it to help find a cure for Cancer!!! :smt045

Heard today from our Team Manager that so far this season the Santa Cruz Run Team has raised over $44,000!!!!!!!

That is a crap load of money, and supposedly $44k is approx what it takes to fund a fellow at Stanford to do research on a Cure for a whole year...so we have basically already paid for one scientist to look for a Cure for a whole year!!!

Our goal as a Team is $90K this season....the Team ShickenMooch fundraising is just a small part of that total, but every little bit adds up!! Every donation you guys have made is adding up to hopefully over 2 YEARS of research for a CURE for Cancer!!

Thinking about that keeps me motivated for sure!!

Had a hard track workout on Thursday which ended with a surprise timed mile...in two months my time improved from 8:10 to 7:33!!
 :smt003
Then dove hard all day Friday and spent enough time chilling in the sun afterwards to get a little burnt and hungover!
 :smt002 :smt004
Saturday AM woke up at 5am to go run 15 miles, then off to a birthday party in Hollister at noon and then another one in San Jose at 2PM!

Little tired and sore today!!
 :smt005 :smt044 :smt044

Here is a little vid I took on Saturday of me and fellow Team ShickenMooch member Miguel Orejel out on our run on West Cliff and then out to Wilder Ranch!

! Private video

Sincerely,

Jim

Here's a little glimpse of what Team ShickenMooch has been doing every Thursday night to get ready for the Marathon on June 18th!!

This particular workout consisted of:

Tabata style (subtracting one drill after each full cycle):
* jump lunges
* burpees w/ push up and vertical jump
* mountain climbers
* squats

*Practicing 18 right-footfalls in 12 seconds for one mile

6 Descending 400s (each one faster than the previous one).

Running 16 miles next Saturday (4/16) from Seaside down into Pacific Grove, past Lovers Point and back!!

Also will be having a fundraising Poker Party on 4/16 at Miguel's house in Watsonville.

I am DONE with my fundraising on my site (once one last matching donation comes in), but Miguel still has a ways to go:

http://pages.teamintraining.org/sj/anchor11/miguel_orejel

Please consider making a donation to his site, supporting Team ShickenMooch AND getting a raffle ticket for a 32 GB WiFi iPad for every $10 donated!!
 :smt006
Sincerely,

Jim

Cool little slideshow Ana put together of Thursday night's brutal workout!!

Coolest thing in my opinion....all these folks are just regular folks....not super athletes....but they are EACH raising THOUSANDS of dollars for blood cancer research (as a team so far we have raised over $77k!!) and are out there getting themselves in shape and are now each endurance athletes....

I have no doubt they will ALL finish their half or full marathons....super cool considering most have never run more than a mile or two!!

THANK YOU once again to NCKA for all your support....if anybody still wants to donate and get a raffle ticket for an iPad (drawing will be 4/27 at Jalisco's bar in Watsonville) you can do it through my team mate Miguel's website at:

http://pages.teamintraining.org/sj/anchor11/miguel_orejel

AND if you want to come out and play some poker, have a drink or 6, and win some bad ass prizes come on out:
