What if I am swimming next to my kayak and I catch a fish ... does it count?

AOTY rule #1 states:

1. All fish entered must be caught from a kayak, without the aid of a powerboat and using methods deemed legal by the California Department of Fish and Game.

And a kayak is defined as a ................... oh chit.  :smt044
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

I was wondering when someone was going to ask that.  Related question is sails.  I'll bring it up to the Committee.

I have no affiliation with any kayak manufacturer. That being said I do own and enjoy my plastic SOT kayak and want to make sure that when I want to buy a new one someday that they will still be available and hopefully with new & improved features, performance, materials, etc. Promoting the kayaks that we all use and love is a good way to make sure that they'll still be around in the future. I am not aware of anyone that participated in 2010 that was using anything other than a plastic SOT kayak for any of their fishing. It seems this is currently a non-issue but allowing all different kinds of watercraft some of which aren't really kayaks to compete in this small, less than 60 people, contest wouldn't be helping that any. Not a big deal.....just something to think about before posting up any more 'Can I use this or that?' kinds of questions. jim

In this thread the whole "this or that" was a few people having fun. I think it's obvious motorized yaks are a no go as well as FG's goofy scenarios. Have a beer on me and let's go kayakfishing!  :yak

Yeah, sorry I kicked that subject up with an innocent question...
I'm sure that this year's AOTY committee (thx 2 U all, BTW) have better things to do.

It did get some people thinking about different human powered ways to be OTW.
Even made me Wikipedia "kayak"

Bottom line, that question and most of my doings on this board and OTW are going to be all about having a good time fishing, period. I gonna try to not get to prickly about the small stuff!

Good luck to all of the AOTY anglers! :smt001

Just a note about questions regarding AOTY and the AOTY Committee.  Please address any questions to polepole AND bsteves in a PM.  If we don't have an easy answer, then we will bring it up to the committee.  Please don't "lobby" the committee members directly.  Thanks.

I did just that, and never got a response back  :smt009

Why does it cost $40 to participate in this?

Thats a lot of scratch for a cheap fisherman.  :smt004

For me it's more like to support this great website.  Winning something from AOTY is just icing on the cake!  Lots of people joining the AOTY but didn't even post their catches.

Well, you get about 40 dollars-worth of swag (like coolers, hawg troughs, lures, etc) and a chance to win a $2000 kayak, multi-hundred dollar rods&reels, fishing trips to exotic locations, etcetera etcetera. But, like Sonny mentioned, it's also a way to supplement the site's cashflow.

Ah, was not aware of all that. I thought it was just for the site bragging rights and a trophy possibly. I've seen the trophy at the San Mateo show and thought that was pretty cool to earn. The last thing I think about when it comes to fishing is freebies or giveaways. I'll need to adjust that looking at all the stuff you mentioned!!.  :smt003

Good question. Participants usually receive AOTY swag @ the annual Awards Ceremony. But it w/b cool to get a list of possible goodies or something. Or a date for the awards ceremony.
