Same here i take 9 squid that last my family for a year. The trick to eating is to soak the meat in water for at least 5 hours to get rid of a bad tasting water soulible peptide.

so i booked a trip for this weekend and was wondering are you supposed to eat these things or not
i haven't really heard yes or no
i have heard to skin both sides and soak in milk for 12 hours then they should be fine to eat deep fry whatever
hopefully the swell is not so big this weekend
should be interesting
exactly what jigs should i get before going anyone have a pic

They taste great, but when a boat comes back with hundreds of lbs of squid per angler,20-40 lbs per squid- where does it go? I can see keeping as much as a freezerfull, but thats like 1 or 2 squid, even if you give lots away, still extra that spoils or does the Capt. keep it? We couldnt even eat that much at a NCKA gathering. 1 or 2 would be crab bait for a season. I would still like to catch and eat one.

Crab bait goes alot quicker than you think.  Last week we ran 8 pots baited with about 7 squid. Aside for the guys who don't plan out what they want/need, I think it all gets used pretty easily.

So  the way I see it......

His PAYING CUSTOMERS are encouraged to catch WAY more squid then they will ever need so HE can SELL the remainder to the CRAB FISHERMEN for a healthy PROFIT.

In short......His customers are PAYING MONEY to WORK for HIM.....

Nice little scam if you ask me.................

I have heard he cusses out the fisherman that try and stop fishing because they think they have enough.......

Wow, I didn't know he sold the leftovers...Rick Powers is a son of a bitch. Yeah, I said it. I'm something of a hypocrite, though, because I've been on his boat several times. The guy sells lures at marked up prices and denies it, he shouts at everyone on the speaker, and he over-crowds the boat. My buddy lost 3 lures due to overcrowding/tangles and had to buy more lures from Mr. Powers - it's a win/win for Powers but a lose/lose for everyone else. And yes, he has been busted for stashing extra rockfish below deck...I want to try the Huli Cat one of these years, although they don't quite seem to get the high squid counts.

Check out my Yelp review of Mr. Powers:

Wow, it seems a lot of people have the same reaction to Rick the #ick. lol Really, that big ole' tough ass squid isnt all that great to eat anyway. The crabs love it though so when I buy some local Dungeness I will have to thank you guys for letting them buy the bait that you caught and Rick the #ick sold to them. :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

If you're in SF, go to Gus's Discount Tackle in the OUter Richmond. Talk to Stephanie and tell her "Andrew the Wolf Eel Guy" sent you. She sells squid jigs for $7! They're smaller but mark my words, they work JUST FINE. All you need to do is clip a 1lb ball to them. Powers will tell you they're not good enough, but don't be fooled by him. Remember - he's a salesman.

Seriously you guys there are so many better party boats than Rick's. Hulicat, New salmon Queen, Outer Limits, New capt Pete, Eldorado, Goldeneye 2000 are just a few. If you want squid try the Hulicat or the New Salmon Queen. Tom will plug the holds and you will probably only have 8 to 10 guys on board. And after you fill up on squid he will most likely run his crab gear for limits of crab!

I'm sure I've read the icing on the cake of the Rick Powers Poaching story goes something like this;

He was busted for poaching. As part of his sentence, he had to take DFG scientists out on some research trips. On one of these trips they discovered this abundance of giant squid. Hey presto, new wintertime fishery and sows ear -> silk purse.

Yeah, this year's trip was the straw that broke the camel's back...in the past, the NSA trips weren't ideal, but they weren't horrible either. The last one sucked, straight up. Next time I'll go on the Huli Cat.
