is that orange thing on the poles for the rails? Oh my!

Rod holders circa late 70's

The New Sea Angler and its sister ship the Merry Jane made thier debut at bodega bay together. 65ft of fiberglass, twin diesel motors. The merry jane almost rolled at the entrance to the jetty in the 80's Capt Rich Tessio lost his license and the Merry Jane left Bodega. Enter Rick Powers a real unique individual that has been busted by the DFG on numerous counts of infractions. One time we were tying dropper loops in the main cabin on the way out and the deckhand told us to turn off the overhead lights to save the batteries. Dennis and myself loked at each other and just starting laughing in his face. No cabin heat. People freezing after being soaked in a squall. Half the clients were in mild hypothermia by the time we got back to port. Never again on that tub for me, ever.

I agree with Craig.

I have personally witnessed Rick and his deckhands encourage and promote poaching. If it was up to me The New Sea Angler would be an artificial reef somewhere right now.

PS - the above is just my opinion of Rick P.

It is not a slam against BnB or his report in any way!

I'd actually like to give the squid a shot myself...just on a different boat.

The last time I went out with him, 10-12 years ago, the swell was so bad that even the deckhand shootie (or something like that) refused to come out of the cabin to clean fish. Did he have any special jigs that he was selling everyone? You know, "the only ones that will work".

naw i brought my own ,he charges 25 dollers for the jig while discount bay tackle sells um for 17

i personally think hes funny , yea hes a shyster n all that but the guy knows how to put people on squid , his #s are way better then other guys and when i pay money for something like that , i go to catch alot of fish/squid , not to feel all warm n cozy.

Nobody is more famous for taking people out in poor conditions and for raping whatever fish population he finds!

I used to fish with Rick when he was running Jaws out of Berkley probably 30/35 trips. No doubt about it he is one of the best fisherman out there. it's just too bad that greed got a hold of him. Catching fish and having a good time is one thing but giving money to a poacher, just doesn't make sense for me.  :smt009

i think all charters rape fish populations , didnt one of the smith dudes hold a ling derby this year and went out and nailed like a hundred lings? all bagged?

think about it , they get payed to put alot of people on fish , when business is booming so are the fish populations

all im saying it this " i payed someone to put me on giant squid & i got my moneys worth , didnt want this thread to turn into some negitive shit :smt001

oh come on, he owns a party boat. He makes his living putting paying costumers on fish or squid. He does a very good job of it.

As far as the jigs he sells goes, the reason why he wants everyone using those jigs is that rockfish for the most part wont hit them. i used a modifyed diamond jig which works much better, but Rick is very nervous and i have to promise not to drop until he is sure that we are on squid. He gets shut dwon real quick if he starts catching rockfish as a bycatch.

They taste great, but when a boat comes back with hundreds of lbs of squid per angler,20-40 lbs per squid- where does it go? I can see keeping as much as a freezerfull, but thats like 1 or 2 squid, even if you give lots away, still extra that spoils or does the Capt. keep it? We couldnt even eat that much at a NCKA gathering. 1 or 2 would be crab bait for a season. I would still like to catch and eat one.
