no law against it.

a few things to worry about:
1. someone running over your trap/buoy in the dark
2. someone pulling your trap and stealing your crab
3. someone pulling your trap and stealing your trap
4. current washing your trap away

if you can handle all of the above then go ahead.  a good idea would be to keep them out of normal boating lanes

So you are not left wondering if you are in a good spot OR there are thieves in the area. Add a zip tie to the pot once closed. If you come back and there are no crab and the tie is still there then its a bad spot and move them. If no crab AND the tie is gone or broken don't leave them overnight. I hate wondering was it me or some A hole!

Unfortunately yes (or at least in the neighborhood).....Its a bit of a paddle back to hang on the beach. I suppose you could cut into the harbor and jig for bait or anchor up and take a nap. Hence the 10 min of hard work and 45 min or total boredom.

It was technically legal (ok, not illegal) to molest other people's traps until last year. Coastside and others pushed hard to edit the wording in the regs. It is now illegal to take crabs from somebody else's traps. So if you do see somebody stealing from your traps, you do have legal recourse. The crabs should be so lucky.

Dabs & Crabs :smt003 My plan is to drop the traps and go after a bucket of Sanddabs. It's always fun to catch those tasty little flatties and will kill the time it takes to soak the traps. Looking forward to the next flat day, maybe this weekend :smt002

I remember being warned by someone on coastside many years ago that that was not cool in the eyes of DFG(ziptieing them closed). I dont remember who, but I do remember it was someone who I trusted. Still havent found anything in the regs though.
Darius, with the traps we use, I would only do it in calm conditions. Traps left in the water near the HMB breakwater have a nasty habit of getting sanded in due to the surge.
I left mine in overnight off of one of the SF beaches and was rewarded with multiple limits of super jumbo for the second day in a row last weekend. Actually in 3 days my (fri, sun, mon) my traps yielded 100 jumbos(10 limits) threw back that many again which were all very legal.
