There are always some people who do things against all logic, especially when they think they are immune to harm. Such as drunken alcoholics who climb behind a wheel.

No kayak fishermen in their right mind would bleed a fish by hanging the carcass in waters known to have great white sharks. What if enough fishermen think that they will be safe doing so because they are using an infallible shark deterrent, and sharks start associating kayaks with food? Do you want the land lord to come up to you to demand rent?

Thus the actions of a few misguided kayakers could put the rest of our lives in danger. That is why I care if people spend their money on unproven devices that give them a false sense of security.

Whoa...that was good!!!  :smt044

Hate to burst your bubble there chief, you know, cause you're so anti-false senses of security and all, but hanging a stringer full of bloody carcasses over the gunwhale or in the tankwell (which has water flushing in and out of the scuppers) is pretty standard practice.  I must be even more out of my mind cause when I'm spearing I keep those bloody carcasses attached to my hip :tongue3:

I know you got a whopping 8 posts under yer belt there hoss but the classifieds isn't the place for this discussion.  Dennis Spike is pretty respected angler and he's here offering a pretty pricey product at a discounted price, if it ain't for you you don't have to post.  I know of a couple guys that use theirs off the yak and one diver who wouldn't get it the water to dive for abs if he didn't have one....if it makes them happy more power to em.

ps...there is no need for a response, oif you wanna discuss this further you can pm me.

..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

You think?  Hmmm ... I went out on a shark dive last year off the Farallones.  The crew made it a point to explain that the sharks do NOT key in on fish blood and carcasses since they are so tuned into seals.

And like Art, I don't hesitated to bleed 'em in the ocean.

Of course, I also have a SS on order.

I must not be in my right mind.   :smt010

I'm still not convinced that they work, but I'm not convinced they don't either.
I kinda wish I had one on "that day" just to see if the fish would have eyeballed another boat.

For me the jury's still out, but I don't think the SS actually does any harm. If they were about $500 cheaper I'd have one. As it is, I'm still not sold on their effectiveness on GWS. On Tigers, I think the SS works fine, no argument.

Maybe, if next season is as sharky as this summer was, maybe I'll change my tune & pony up. Either that or I'll only fish next to EricB.

Oh, I was serious that my wife wants to get one for me.
I just didn't have an answer for her when she asked, "Can you guarantee that you won't get attacked by a white shark while you're wearing this thingy?" My response was Uhhh...maybe?

I had the same conversation, almost verbatim.  :smt044

Hah!  The conversation with my girlfriend went a bit differently.  She "thinks" it works so she will hassle me less when I go out on the big blue.  Piece of mind comes in many forms.   :smt002

The Tuolumne River? Ever see the movie Deliverance? Wonder if they can make a Redneck Shield?

Comments for or against the shark shield really should be posted in a different forum. Spike's simple offer of a discounted price is being obscured.

Well said Hojo I have bought a few things off Spike and I know that he could have sold them for more elsewhere Top quality products with full Guarantee it's nice he gives us first shot at a huge discount let's not blow it.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

First off, you guys couldn't "blow it with me...especially over someone else's contribution.  The relationship is mutually beneficial, I'm partial to NCKA (and the CKF Forum) and happy to pass on the deals.
This is actually a pretty informative thread.  I'm  done defending those "it doesn't work" claims that pop up regularly and globally.  I truly believe that all the poorly informed opinions on Shark Shield are from anglers who would never consider the product for themselves.

Somebody suggested a controlled study or something similar.  I'm not sure that's necessary with the research to date (refer to the web site) or even doable under current laws.

As far as a "guarantee"...I think the airbag analogy is a good one but it's safer than an air bag.  If you run out of charge, forget to power up or damage the unit (it signals you if there is a problem), you don't have a Shark Shield.

The best guarantee I could personally offer is my endorsement.  I feel good enough about Shark Shield to stake my reputation on it.

Shark Shield absolutely repels white sharks.  In this thread and beyond, there is talk about how it deters tigers and not white sharks.  Species is not a factor, the size of the shark (skate and ray) is.  Shark Shield testing was done mostly on white sharks.  I haven't been able to get any shark bigger than a dogfish to the boat w/o turning off the field. That's because the bigger the "ampullae of Lorenzini", the sensory receptors in the snouts of sharks, the better the deterrent effect.

Sorry Spike.  I guess this is my bad.  When you said there was proof that it works, I was hoping you could direct me somewhere.  I'll check their website.  Wasn't really intending to start a discussion.
