Dude that sucks Dustin. Chalk it up to fate. But if there's a lesson here--it's land before Jim next time haha!

What good what a devastating wipe-out be if it wasn't documented?  :smt003

Yard sales. Two kinds. Those whov'e had em and those who are going to have one....   :smt012 Best you can do is try to minimize the damage. Never underestimate the the potential of a wave. I got dumped on a knee slapper once. At least I only had my crabbing gear on there and got it all back. It was more of a bruise to my ego than my wallet tho... If I'm diong a surf launch, I minimize my gear and ALWAYS  stow the gear. As you painfully just learned, it's just not worth the chance...sorry brother, but good attitude. The ocean, she gives, and she taketh...

... It could've been a lot worse and you could've been stuck in Phoenix or someplace in the AZ.

OK here's my story...
I got there at about 9 or so got J on the radio, and decided to go for it despite the wind/chop, Ive gone out in worse so...
Everything battened down for the launch, the cockpit filled to the brim on the first of 6 or so waves over the bow, tridents do not drain fast-poor design- so water of course fills the inside, I got past the breakers and DAMN, the bilge pump is inside, so I take off the pod cover with the tackle box of assorted goodies on top, thinking Im past the worst, after a minute of pumping in this vulnerable position, I take a 10 foot sneaker/breaker to the port and its all over...I loose my eyeglasses, a cool little monocular and plyers ect...I want to come up on the oceanside of the yak, but my PFD got tangled in the gameclip leash so I had to come up on the BAD side just when the next one nailed the yak and slammed/ dragged me, still in over my head, I jettisoned the PFD/tangle, and hung on to the yak, trying to get the bow under the next waves like a surfboard, finaly getting some sand under my feet and dragged it as much as I could to shore, got some help from some dudes on shore but had a yak filled with sand and water by then, it was a bit heavy...got my radio back, its a floater, and some other crap that floats too, and my life that just flashed before my eyes.
Lesson learned-ALWAYS keep an eye out for waves when the hatch is open, DO NOT attach the game/fish gripper leashes till your out.
Not as expensive as Dustins whipe-out, and not as impressive as my full-endo last year on the same beach but what fun!
It sucked me in and spit me back out.
Glad you guys did some good @ Paradise.
Im thinking of building a bilge access hole in the pod cover to bilge without taking it off, and putting the trans somewhere else so the scuppers can do their job.

Have you tried coming in on the back of the wave. Google-  kayak landing + surf.       http://www.canoekayak.com/features/techniques-tips/surfkayaktechniques/

You can tie down your rods at your feet and hip on the gunwale with two 18" pieces of line. I've flipped like that and only had to clean reels etc.
