Bummer Dustin  :smt013 glad you are OK

Dustin-

I actually don't know what to say except I'm glad that you are in good spirits... (at least, it sounds like it.) Brutal loss man... Hopefully, Mr. Tani can revive your Toro. As bad as it was, it could've been worse. I'm not going to mention any names or anything but... It could've been a lot worse and you could've been stuck in Phoenix or someplace in the AZ.

Thanks everybody!

I think the others were more bummed than me. I can't really be too sad, 'cause I knew better. I'm not new to this. I'll just chalk it up to paying my dues.

And thanks to all that were there for helping me look for my stuff.

Now...if the Toro is DOA then I will be sad.  :smt010

Great pics, I was waiting for these.  :smt011 :smt005

Like Dustin said, the fishing sucked and the conditions were crap. The Coast Guard was out in force, and I figure they were investigating all the chunks of a broken up boat we saw in the area. On the plus side I was able to catch plenty of bait. Too bad there was nothing around to eat the bait.

Launch and landing was a bit sketchy. Unfortunately Rockhopper and Guitarzan paid the price. There's something a little helpless about standing on the beach and watching others get worked by a wave. The pictures don't do justice. A few of those sets had some big wave faces. I'm sorry for Ben and Dustin's crashes, but there's some odd voyeuristic enjoyment we all get looking at he pics and hearing the story. It hasn't happened to me yet, and I'm hoping I won't be explaining my own carnage pics any time soon!

Ryan and I had a good time, always fun just to be on the water.  Winds were up, which made it tough for any controlled drifts.  Coming in we landed south of the big rock, and was alot calmer.  Walking over to pic up my wheels, where you came in Dustin was like a washing machine.

Crab was released, of course. After getting blanked at Muir Ravensblack, Bird, and myself decided to put our remaining shiners to good use and jetted over to Paradise for some fun in the sun. And wind. Lots and lots of wind. During a moment, and I mean like a minute, of slack winds Bird scored a nice 29" halibut. You the man. But that was not to be the only catch of the day. With Ravensblack at the launch and Bird almost there I was almost under the pier on the south side and hooked something big. It stripped off line towards the pier, I locked the drag, instantly it did a 180 & I saw my line smoking past me as I frantically reeled in the slack, it spun me around and now I was headed towards the south end of the outer pier where there were 3 guys with their lines out. I said "Sorry guys but I got something big on" as I almost crossed their lines. Just then I saw it surface. Effing furbag.  :smt013 Now I was out past the pier with the wind blowing 20 with gusts to ? I pulled in as much line as I could, brought out the knife, and kissed my rig goodbye. Sorry no pics of the offending furbag my big "catch of the day". Oh yay..... :smt005

P.S. Thanks to Rockhopper for letting us borrow your pass and again sorry for your losses today. Craig thanks for driving. jim

Dustin I am going down to Muir at low tide in the am. If I locate the rod I will give you a shout. The conditions today at Muir were way less than optimal. When we crested the hill and looked down on the ocean it was ugly already. Chop, dark skies with foggy overcast and wind building already. By 9:30am it was just a bit more than depressing so most of us called it. When we launched it wasnt bad but a little westerly swell built up on the incoming so there were some 4-5ft waves when we were coming in. I am always amazed at the power these little bastards still have. Plus the fact these are not nimble little craft that can turn on a dime. When I came in I backstroked up the face and then when it was under the front part of the boat I paddled forward to a cool landing. Then I turned to my right to see Dustin coming down the face and turning and thought, Here we go. I'm glad you are ok dude. You too Ben. Poor Ben never even made it out to what you wouldnt even call fishing. After the Muir debacle myself and Jim and John( bird) went to Paradise. We launched at 1:30 pm.( who in hell launches at paradise at 1:30 pm?) Oh , I know the anwser to that one. By the time we got blown out of that place the winds must have been gusting to 25 MPH. Highlight of the day on a positive note was that Bird got a nice halibut right as the wind came smokin' down on the fog edge.

A good day on the water with lessons for all. Sorry about the loss Dustin. I guess we all pay eventually.

Brothers on the water, hold fast to our memories. Share the good and the not so good.

Bummer, Dude.  Time to take up snorkeling to attempt some recovery...

Craig and I had our gear with us, and we considered a recovery dive attempt, but if you look a little closer at the water you'll see the vis was a very sandy zero ft. We all did the stingray shuffle round and round trying to feel out the gear with our feet to no avail. The tide was coming up and was increasing the wave size. I went up to my neck and got a sandy mouthful.....oh damn, that's nasty. :smt003 Maybe low tide will reveal the "wreck". jim
