I knew "that" pic would be appreciated. :smt044 I forgot all about that brand new cooler bag I found floating. It still had the price tag on it and hey.....it's my fav color. +Thanks to the coastside pb's that kicked me those live sardines. Worked great for the furbag catch.....not so good for the hali's. :smt005 jim

Sorry about your stuff, that is never fun...

Weather aside, thanks for the fun morning on the water it was good to meet all of you.

If it is any consolation, I need to get a whole new kayak shipped to me after mine filled with water today.

Bummer brother.  Me and Shimmy fished up north and the weather went heck REAL quick.  We launched in ankle biters, landed in barrels.  We both went swimming!  All gear was stashed, but I did have to run down Shimmy's lunch box.

The guys nailed the story above.  Choppy, cold and fishless at Muir.  Saved my landing with a quick move at the end.  Craig, Jim and I hit Paradise and got a little time in before getting blown out. It was blowing when we launched but the area south of the pier was sheltered and fishable.  Then the wind increased and swung a bit more to the West and it got ugly everywhere. There was a couple on SITs that had launched out of Paradise Cay that got caught out in the rough stuff and struggled hard to make it back to Paradise.  The women is in the background sitting on the ground in one of Jim's pics.  Craig had to help her land and get her boat onshore - she was totally wasted and was just lying on the cement afterwards while the guy headed to P-Cay to get their vehicle.  What a day!

Dustin - was bummed all last night over your misfortune.  Glad Craig was able to get a little back this morning. Glad everyone is OK.

Good seeing everyone.

Nice to see everyone was safe in the end. Seems as though everyone's cameras are always on for both.

PAID ADVERTISMENT:

We at the Federation of Angling Tackle Employees (FATE) would like to offer our spin on this situation.  We feel all kayak anglers are over blowing the idea of stowing gear.  Dustin now gets the opportunity to upgrade much of his arsenal, while stimulating the economy and providing jobs to FATE.  So lets not hear condolences being offered up but rather high fives all round  :smt003

Dude! I will not bring it up. I am just glad that you are OK. Glad to hear Craig was
able to save your Trevala setup. At least that saves some money there a little.

Congrats John on the nice halibut and thanks Jim for sharing the pictures you took
of everybody.

Two things worth pointing out about this trip (besides the obvious)

1 - Ben, me, and I think Kiaikai all needed or would have benefitted from bilge pumps. I took two waves over the top of my yak while launching. Both of them completely filled the cockpit of my yak, and since I had a nice fat Granny Smith in the tray of my rod pod the lid wasn't closed too tightly. I ended up having to pump a few gallons out of my yak. Same thing happened to Ben. I think he got hit with his rod pod opened.

2 - You can wipe out in the surf while wearing waders and not die. Take it for what it's worth, but I went completely under and the only water that got in my waders was what my fleece shirts soaked up and transferred down my waist. The bottom of my pants and my socks were totally dry. I was not wearing the belt either. What I do is pull the drawstring as tight as possible at my chest. The water-proof jacket I was wearing also had the drawstring pulled tight around my waist....I'm sure that helped as well. Definitely not advocating wearing waders in the ocean...just stating the facts of this incident.

yeah, that's one thing about the tridents.  they do not drain out quickly if you get water in the cockpit. especially if you have a transducer mounted in the front scupper hole.  i have not really compared the size of the front scupper holes with other kayaks, but they just seem to be slow draining. maybe its the size or the angle or something to do with the buoyancy of the yak?

the rod pods, as hard as we try, do seem to leak slightly if you get nearly submerged.  a pump + bilge sponge should help that.

also, i have noted that the factory mounted flushmounts leak slightly as well, top the screws off with some goop or silicon and it will help it.

i have yet to flip my trident upside down ::knock on wood:: but this is just what i learned from one day of surf launch practice early this year.
