Big Sur campout
September 25-27
Plaskett Creek campground, groups sites 1 and 2

This is the first kayak fishing event to take place in Big Sur.
Notice I said “event” instead of tournament; that’s because it is not a tournament. This event is going to be formatted like the traditional Fish 'N' Chill events that we’ve enjoyed in the past. The primary focus is on camping and having a good time, and catching big fish is simply ‘icing on the cake.’
But there will be prizes! Everybody who competes on the day of the event (Saturday, Sept 26) will receive a raffle ticket. After fishing Saturday, we’ll have a raffle to award prizes. This way, everybody has the opportunity to win. [I’m working on some great prizes and donations right now!]
Plus, this also gives us a chance to promote conservation in the community. I’d like to see people practice C+R whenever possible, in order to preserve this amazing fishery. But at the same time, I completely understand that some people will want to bring home a stringer of fish—that’s cool—I just don’t want people to feel compelled to bring home every single big fish, simply because it’s a competition. This will also make the locals feel comfortable sharing the water with us…the last thing they want to see is 100 guys from the Bay Area show up and harvest all the fish.

We have 1 group site on Friday night and 2 group sites on Saturday night. Each group site allows 40 people and 10 cars. I only got 1 site for Friday because I anticipate most people will drive down on Sat morning.
Plug “Gorda, CA” into Google maps for distance & drive times. It is approx 1.5 hours from Carmel (depending on how fast you drive and if you get stuck behind an RV).
I also anticipate that we’ll have more cars than allowed—that’s fine because we can park along the HWY which is only about 200ft away, and completely legal. The vehicle passes will be awarded to people who carpool. After that, they’ll be handed out on a first-come basis (please PM me if you have questions or extenuating circumstances). We might be able to pay a fee for additional vehicles, but that is up to you. Either way, I don’t expect it to be an issue.

The fee is going to be $10/person/night with family discounts available. And I’m pretty flexible on the family discount thing, so just send me a PM if you have questions. Wives, GFs, significant-others, and kids are welcome too. My wife and 2 year-old son will be there for sure. There’s plenty of stuff for families + kids to do while we’re out fishing: hiking, biking, sunbathing, collecting jade at Jade Cove, playing on Sand Dollar beach, etc. Sand Dollar beach is a day-use area right across the street and Jade Cove is only about a half-mile south of the campground. And Plaskett Creek campground is also dog friendly! As is Sand Dollar beach, provided they’re on a leash. None of the other campgrounds allow dogs, if I remember correctly.

This part of Big Sur is somewhat remote, so you should gas up in Carmel (at Rio Rd) and don’t plan on buying gear or food down there—if you think you might want it, bring it with you. Like most Fish 'N' Chill events, there will be plenty of food as long as everybody contributes something. There will be a separate thread for food, so please limit your carnitas-specific requests to that thread haha.

The tricky part of this event is the logistics of launching: where to launch and how many people can a spot accommodate? Viable kayak launches are few and far between down there. We basically have 2 options right now: Mill Creek day-use and Willow Creek day-use areas. Hopefully we also have the option to launch from Limekiln campground, if it reopens in time. Sand Dollar beach is another option.
We will decide upon a launch site based on the marine conditions that Ma Nature throws at us. This means we may have to split up into groups, with newbies going to the easy/safe launch and experienced people going to the other launch, etc, etc. Because Big Sur is not really the best place for beginners, due to the isolation from services/ports and the rugged harshness of the open ocean. I’m not trying to discourage anyone from attending, just keepin’ it real. But please get some practice in the surf zone before this event, if you haven’t already done so! [Insert plug for Aaron’s kayak safety course at MBK on 9/19 -- highly recommended]

I probably missed some stuff. But I’ll do my best to address any other concerns that arise. At this point, the event details are dynamic (and I am open to suggestion – send PM).

Here’s a link to the original thread that has some additional info like maps and campground info: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,16059.0.html
And here is a list of people who originally expressed interest. Please confirm if you are still coming. And likewise if you can’t make it. Either by replying here or via PM.

I almost forgot to mention that this is an unofficial NCKA event and therefore NCKA would assume no liability whatsoever. It is just a bunch of friends who want to get together and catch fish. I also assume no liability for anything bad that happens. In other words, don't make me write up a liability waiver.  :smt008

if you do make up a waiver have it read as follows:  "you will die." :smt003

e2g and n2g are still on board.  Probably aim for Friday and Saturday night.  One car.
