Welcome to my world. I lost about 5 churches on Sept 21, 2007.
Churches that I visited and protected on a weekly basis for nearly a decade.
Gone.
The sting has become less intense. Or maybe I have become numb to the pain. But I still feel it. And yesterday's meeting reminded me how much it hurts.

My thoughts are with you guys up north. Sometimes anger is an appropriate emotion.

This sucks for you.  Can you identify any local enviro groups that really screwed you?  Maybe join.  Diversity of opinion is a good thing.  Unless they want to admit that only they have it right.  Either way, it give you a better chance of putting a turd in the punchbowl.

It wasn't necessarily local environmental groups that fucked us over, it was big money that fucked is over.  Environmental defense foundation, sierra club, packard foundation, natural resources defense council, etc.

It all comes down to money, and they have more than us.

I was impressed with the hard fight the seaweed harvesters put into this.  What a slap in the face to add Seal Cove to the IPA.

If Horseshoe is an area that will be closed I will make sure to head up to the area of Sea Ranch. Since the money from up there was able to push the closure lower I will make sure to show up there with ab iron and fishing pole. I will make sure to visit this location as much as possible in the next few month. Having a party at Ocean Cove Aug 21,22,23. Let's dive this a few more times!

+1  If I recall correctly one of the guys that threw Stewarts Point area under the bus in the BRTF process did so to keep Sea Ranch and his top secret big ab spot open. You can bet that a lot of the Horseshoe Cove divers will be heading up north now. Sea Ranch Abs.....that's whats for dinner. jim

I hate to be so out of it, being a newbie, but what just happened? Did we lose the whole coast of ours to fish in?

What happened is the environmental money forced through a series of preserves for the north central coast. The DFG commission decided to implement the closures with out the money to enforce these new preserves.

1. DFG can not enforce the new preserves. Due to lack of funding. This will cost from 11 - 30 million. They have 0. There was 4 million that was taken from the department in the budget cuts but was shifted back from the coastal commission.

2. Certain commission members have conflicts of interest as in Mike Sutton who works the Packard Foundation and being invested for such.

3. Days before the critical vote, a commission member resigned due to conflict of interest. She was considered the swing vote. She was replaced by a Arnold puppet.

This is the impact.
4. Access points were lost.

5. The remaining access points will see additional pressure from the displacement.

6. POACHERS will strip entire sections of preserves because there will be no sportsman there to help be CalTip eyes.

7. The increased pressure to the limited areas COULD ultimately lead to a reduction in bag limits/seasons or closures.

When I think about memories of fishing Ano Nuevo and Yankee Point alone, with friends,my Dad and Grandfather I feel gut-punched. It's like a piece of our heritage was stolen.

I feel your pain, anger and frustration. :smt010

I'm terribly sad Craig.  Thanks for making it to the meeting and doing your best, along with the rest of the folks who made it.  I could not go either, but it sounds like many of us did what we could via e-mails and letters.

Knowing the level of "conflict of interest" inherent on the voting panel seems to throw all our good intentions out the window, which makes this whole thing even worse......not even a fair shake at the debate.   :smt011

We have to continue to do what we can, and deal with the outcomes the best we can.  This is a terrible loss....

So who's down for a Sea Ranch kayak fishing trip?  It'll take some serious early morning carpooling, as those lots are tiny and probably fill up fast.

http://sonic.net/~rocky/scsearanch.htm

"In a concession to the California Coast Commission, there are five public access easements off Hwy 1 with teeny, tiny parking lots (mostly 2 to 5 parking slots) and restroom facilities maintained by Sonoma County. Parking is, last I checked, $3 per day unless you have a Sonoma County Parks parking pass (something I recommend if you're visiting/diving the area a lot). The following are the public access points at Sea Ranch."
