They wouldn't cross over to the dark side, would they?  They'd lose respect in many people's eyes.  On the other hand, I've always loved the Rod pod, if they could just figure out how to incorporate that with some pedal power, then I'd cross over from Hobie :smt002

The new boat is called the OK Torque and it's not a pedal craft, rather it's a kayak with a MinnKota trolling motor built into the tank well.  Anyway, they just put out a press release a few days ago.

Quote
Ferndale, WA (June 18, 2009) Ocean Kayak, a renowned leader in paddlesports industry for over
35 years, is pleased to introduce the new Torque fishing kayak. Crafted around the successful
Prowler Trident Angler kayak platform, the new Torque seamlessly blends all the features anglers
need on the water and includes a Minn Kota Maximizer trolling motor with infinite variable speed
control and reverse.
The Torque’s motor system is engineered for convenience and provides anglers with a true hands-free
trolling option. Unlike the competition, the Torque motor has variable speed control, which operates
along a spectrum rather than a fixed dial system to help anglers find their perfect trolling speed.
The drive system provides up to 33 pounds of thrust that is controlled through a drive speed control
knob in the cockpit and an extra large rudder that provides superior handling and control. For added
utility the drop-in motor, mounted through the tank well, is easily accessible and can be assembled and
disassembled without tools.
“An exceptional fishing kayak, the Torque is incredibly well integrated and offers all the features today’s
kayak angler has come to expect from Ocean Kayak,” said Sara Knies, Senior Brand Manager for Johnson
Outdoors Paddlesports. “Unlike anything else on the market today, the Torque accommodates a plug and
play motor that provides our consumers unparalleled convenience and performance.”
A stable, 13’ 10” kayak, the Torque offers a dry ride, foot pegs for all day comfort and good tracking
both while paddling and under power. The Torque also includes a removable skeg for improved
tracking when the motor is not in use. Other key features include a large bow hatch, areas to mount
fishing accessories, transducer compatible scupper hole, paddle keeper and a comfortable seat back.
Available in two colors, yellow and sand, the new Torque will hit specialty stores later this
summer. SRP: $ 1,999 US. For more information about the Ocean Kayak™ brand, our kayak
fishing team and our latest innovations please visit www.oceankayak.com.

i would prefer it to have been a pedal drive...

pat, i do not believe that is a rod pod, its just a cover for a semi dry storage area like they have on the big game.

I'm with you on that bassmanben since access removal of propelled shafts would happen just about every outing through shallow water or grass sometimes needs to be done quickly and easily.  I think that OK is trying a different marketing approach from that of the regular pedal drive of Hobie or Native yaks.  Can't wait to see it in person to get a better idea of its functionality.

bassmanben I wonder if that small rod pod is now the battery box to run the trolling motor.

I suppose I could see this appealing to the niche market of people who don't want to paddle but want to access backwaters that are too difficult to get to with a small jon boat and trolling motor. You could just put it on a rolleze to get where you want. But other than that, for $2k plus the boat registration fees this will require, I can't see this selling real well.

You get all the stability of a kayak for the cost of a decent jon boat w/electric motor? If you don't like the human powered aspect of what we are all doing, then why would you buy this boat instead of something more stable with greater storage and potentially greater comfort, for the same price or less?

I'm sure OK did their marketing homework, but I don't get it.

I agree.  Ruin the Rod Pod (best thing ever) for a feature I don't want on a hull that isn't right for the FB thats going to want electric power.  Who designs this crap?
