List of Bay Area state parks that would close

Friday, May 29, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(05-29) 12:35 PDT San Francisco -- In the Bay Area and nearby, virtually every state recreational property would be closed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the North Bay, the list includes Mount Tampalpais, Angel Island, Samuel P. Taylor, Tomales Bay and China Camp state parks; Olompali, Benicia Capitol, Jack London, Petaluma Adobe, Sonoma and Bale Grist state historic parks; Benicia State Recreation Area; and Bothe-Napa Valley State Park.

Also slated for closure in the North Bay are Salt Point, Sonoma Coast and Sugarloaf Ridge state parks, the Kruse Rhododendron State Natural Reserve and Fort Ross State Historic Park.

In the East Bay, the list includes Mount Diablo State Park, the East Shore State Park State Shoreline and John Marsh Home State Historic Park.

In San Francisco, Candlestick Point State Recreation Area would be closed.

Along the San Mateo and Santa Cruz county coasts, the list of beaches and parks on the target list includes:

Half Moon Bay, Montara, Bean Hollow, Pescadero, Gray Whale Cove, Lighthouse Field, Natural Bridges, San Gregorio, Sunset and Seacliff state beaches; Big Basin Redwoods, Portola Redwoods, Butano, Castle Rock, Henry Cowell Redwoods and Wilder Ranch state parks; the Point Montara Light Station; and Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park.

To the north, numerous beaches along the Mendocino coastline would be off-limits, including Russian Gulch, Van Damme and MacKerricher state parks. To the south, the hit list includes Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Andrew Molera state parks at Big Sur and Henry W. Coe State Park in Morgan Hill.

I wouldn't go so far as to call a lingcod filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a lingcod's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

:smt011 Best fishing I ever had was at Bean Hollow and Fort Ross. This is so sad.

Does this means there would be no access to the coast from those areas? That's almost every f***ing decent launch spot on the coast.  :smt011

I wonder if the state could be sued for coastal access?  :smt013

"Off limits?" Since when does a piece of land require "park status" for me to walk across it, launch a yak, or have a picnic? The launch at Bean doesn't require parking within the park, so I see no reason why I wouldn't continue to launch there.

Here's more news about this:

Nearly all Bay Area state parks would close
Kelly Zito, Chronicle Staff Writer

Friday, May 29, 2009

(05-29) 13:13 PDT San Francisco -- Mount Tamalpais, Angel Island and nearly every other state park, beach and historic site in the Bay Area would be closed under a draft plan released by state officials showing how parks would be affected by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed budget cuts.

Only 59 state parks in California - from 279 state parks - could be saved because they are self sustaining or operate by local cities and counties, according to Roy Stearns, director of communications for California State Parks.

The only parks in the Bay Area that would not close under the proposed budget cuts are Albany State Marine Reserve, Emeryville Crescent State Marine Reserve, Lake Del Valle State Recreation Area, Pacifica State Beach and San Bruno Mountain State Park.

But the most scenic and popular parks and beaches cannot be kept open due to cuts that would force the lay offs of maintenance workers, office technicians, park superintendents, landscapers, rangers, environmental scientists, administrative officers and bookkeepers.

The governor's proposed cuts aim to reduce the state's $24.3 billion shortfall and would require Legislative approval.

The proposal seeks to eliminate all general fund money from state parks, which would result in closure of 220 state parks over the next two years.

Stearns emphasized that the list is preliminary. The proposal will no doubt be subject to intense lobbying in the Legislature between now and July 1, when the fiscal year starts. Overall, the proposal aims to cut $70 million of the $150 million the park system receives from the state's general fund in fiscal year 2009-10. The remainder would be cut out in the 2010-11 budget.

Aside from crimping vacation plans for thousands of Californians and other out-of-state visitors this summer, the cuts could have untold economic impacts on the businesses and communities close to the parks that supply visitors with food, lodging, gas and other amenities.

Anybody "tresspassing" on state-owned property would be seen as a potential liability by the state. They don't want Joe the Plumber to pull a hammy while jogging on the beach...because there wouldn't be any personnel to assist him...and he could potentially sue the state. Right?

I imagine they need a park ranger there to get me for trespass  :smt044

We should have laws like Hawaii does for beach access...

How convenient to close kayak accessible fishing by closing state parks that have it.
MPLA will have just gotten bigger if it happens.
Coincidence?? I think not.

Have any of us ever used the park at Bean...no!  We park on the road and use the trail.  You will still be able to do that.
