it says 5 kts.  not 5-10 or 5-15, it's just 5 kts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  we're on.  ok, we've got phil (northern boy),  phil (Ebyekewabjeget), Tall Paul and SCAllen.  i have a deckhand already, so aaron, we'll have to get you out next time.  i will be leaving my house at 4am and arriving at the coast guard launch ramp at 5:30am.  there are two launch ramps in monterey.  the first is just past fisherman's wharf.  the second is through the tunnel, then make your first right hand turn and that will dump you into the coast guard launch ramp.  sean and i will launch the boat, tie it off and park the truck.  i will need you guys to drag you kayaks down and mount them on those beautiful brackets that scott made for us last year.  i want to be through the jaws at 6am.  that will put us on station at 7am.  i am thinking about dropping you in just outside the kelp, then heading out into deeper water.  if you do not have a gps and vhf radio, i have extras.  key up on channel 11 and stay in contact.  we will pull the plug at noon and hopefully be back at the barn at 2pm.  this will give you 5 hours on the water.  once back at the dock, the kayaks are clear.  sean and i will scrub the boat when we get back to my place.

oh, and everyone bring cameras.  i want lots of pictures.  alan

everyone ping me and let me know you read this.  northern boy, send me your cell # as well.

i'm hoping we do well. it is a bit early in season.  september/october would really be the time to do this.  ling cod should be in close later in the year.  the real advantage of kayaks is access to the kelp.  i can get in as close as i want, or even run through the stuff i want, but the prop is basically giant cuisanart.  if i start sucking small bits of kelp into the engine, it will be a long paddle back home.

there was one thing that had me concerned on the last trip.  when i cleaned the fish, their bellies were totally empty.  the bocaccio had a half digested sea trout in it, but the other rockfish were starving!  alan

Let me get this straight. We're going to be fishing completely virgin kelp beds in which the fish are starving hungry?

I'm gonna need a bigger stringer.

you know, no one yet has hooked and landed an albacore from a kayak in northern california.  the basic game plan is to mothership the kayaks out on racks to albacore water, then launch them and tow them from the boat.  with jigs in the water and live bait ready, we'll troll until we get a jig strike.  as soon as that happens, we'll dump a dozen baits into the water, release the kayaks with a few baits, and pull the jig fish under and past the now free floating kayaks.  that should bring the school directly underneath the kayaks.  the rest is up to you.
