MBK Monterey Bay Kayaks 3rd Annual Fishing Derby 8/15 UPDATED!!!!

Basically we have 5 hours out and back to MBK. Can someone more familiar with paddling there give me an idea of the effective range - how far we can go and still get in some concentrated fishing? How far down the peninsula or down towards Sand City? Any restricted areas other than around Hopkins Marine Station?

Eugene, that was my best friend Paul! I let him borrow my spare kayak for the tourney. And told him he'd catch a huge halibut if he didn't pay the fee. I was almost right--he caught a huge cabezon that would've won 1st place! He's going to pay the $ this year......

that depends on so many factors its hard to say.  Scott (greatbass2) could probably paddle to Santa Cruz and back.  What I would recommend is timing yourself on the way out and give yourself that time plus 10-50% more depending on the wind in the late morning.

ive been waiting months for this weekend, and i Fed up and planned a camping trip in tahoe the same weekend as these derbies, BUMMER, I cant back out either, I got other people going, ERRRRRR!!!

Derby Rules:
*All DFG rules apply, including the multiple rod rule.  If you are fishing for halibut and have no rockfish aboard, you can fish with 2 rods.  One RCG fish on the boat=one rod only.

Don't know if any of you got confused with this tidbit, but luckily PK cleared it up for me...

Sounds like great fun! last year it was pretty slow but things will probably be different this year and who knows, the winning fish could be a 3 pound rockcod or a 4 foot ling

Can anyone recommend a decent hotel close to the launch?

Theresa and I are definitely in. We are going to stay in a hotel too Saturday night. I scoped out a BUNCH of places, and the scary looking dives run $130, the "economy hotels" like Super 8 cost $170, the nicer places like Hilton run $230, and B&B's run anywhere from $250 on up.

The weird places are out of the question and we definitely want a place with a pool so Theresa and I decided that we'd spring for the extra $60 for the Hilton and call it our Anniversary trip.
