I purchased a brand new 2008 Honda Civic Sedan in August of last year and the car currently has probably around 22K on it (yes, I commute)... and BOTH the rear brakes are wearing unevenly.  So much so that I don't think they can be sanded down.  And it's BOTH the rear brakes.  The front are perfectly smooth.  It's covered under warranty and extended warranty, and I'm not going to try and fix the problem myself, but being a female (a feisty one at that), I'd like to go in with a knowledge of who/what/where/when/how/why.  I've checked recalls and found nothing.

Thoughts?  I'm attaching two pictures.  One of the front brakes, and one of the rear (keep in mind the rear brakes both look similar).... and the pads are plenty thick...

I'll upload pics later... any ideas in the meantime?   :smt011

If "both" breaks are wearing out "unevenly", doesn't that mean that they are wearing out evenly???  :smt044

Unless you have driven it in sand it should be a warranted issue the backs should last a long time it's the fronts that normally get all the wear. I would take it to an independent shop and get an estimate before taking it to the dealer, if the dealer wants to chage you anything call Honda USA and file a complaint they are pretty helpful.
Does it have anti-lock? The rear brakes should last 100K.

As I explained to Michelle after looking at her brakes and point them out, the rotors are being "grooved/scarred". It is not that they are wearing unevenly, such a warping, but there are grooves getting cut in to the rotors by the pads. Possible issue with the pad retaining clips?

I would start going back to the dealer. After X number of returns, you might qualify for getting a new car under the "lemon" law if still not fixed.

That's what I'm planning - I'm just surprised because I've always driven a Honda and this surprises me after so few miles :(

who/what/where/when/how/why.

Well if your anything like my lady...she likes to drive around with the E-Brake on and hit curbs ...her typical response is :smt102 "I don't know how that happened".  :smt011

Are the pads cracked if so they will grove the crap out of the rotor and especially if they are a ceramic pad they chew up the rotor even worse.

As Mike says your rear brakes should last a really long time, 100,000 on the rear isn't unreasonable because the front brakes should be doing most of the work.  If you are seeing grooves on both sides of the car, only on the rear, then your rear brakes may be worn out and the rivets in the pads are wearing into the rotors and causing the grooves, I'm not sure if hondas have wear sensors that cause a squeek as they get close to wearing out, if they do you should have heard it, if not you get no warning and end up with the grooves unless the wear got caught in a periodic brake inspection.  If this problem is caused by your rear brakes being worn out, then something is definetly wrong.  It could be a problem with the e-brake, but if it was just because the e-brake was left on, it would have to have been left one for quite some time, which doesn't seem likely.

Go to the dealer and tell them when they fix the problem to give you a set of NEW rotors, if they have to surface yours (at only 22K) then they aren't going to last as long as they should have so you deserve new ones,

I very rarely use my E-brake.... so obviously something is wrong at only 22K....

Thanks for everyone's input!  My baby has an appt at 9am.... I'll let you know the verdict ;)

Toyota's are the BOMB, but Honda's are good too!  My 02' Accord just had it's FIRST break job, at 98,000 miles.  New rotors and pads on the front, rear were fine just needed pads!

I had a 92 Accord before this one and it was a trooper, so thats why I'm puzzled and a tad concerned about the issues so early on  :smt012
