Check the opening page for the halibut article to get you started.  They are all a good read to get started.  Enjoy.

I use a big 3-way swivel.
Mainline goes to one ring, about 36" of leader line leading to a hoochie or lure (you can rig a flasher in there too if you like) goes to ring #2, and finally about 24" of line from ring #3 goes to whatever sinker you'll need to stay on the bottom (I use anywhere from 2oz up to 8oz normally).
I paddle slow and let the weight "tic" the bottom as I paddle.

I use a similar set up to Piscean:

Big 3-way with about 18" of line to an 8" dodger followed by 5' of line to an RSK with an anchovy or herring clipped in. From the 3rd part of the 3 way, I use about 12" of line to a snap where I clip on enough weight to keep it occasionally tapping the bottom while paddling slowly, usually 3 - 10 oz.

Crossline Swivel > 3-Way, way less line twist.  Started using these for live bait drifting also.

Duh, I'm such a dork, until now I didn't even realize what the difference was between crossline & 3-way swivels! I recently figured they must just be 2 different names for the same thing. Now I see the difference. Thanks!

...and yes, sometimes I get a lot of line twist with the 3-ways.

I use a mooching rig, pre-tied by Eagle Claw (.79 cents) with the two hooks (front one slides with some effort). I slide the front hook forward on the line and cut off the rear hook, then I replace the rear hook with a treble hook. I tie the front end of the line to a banana sinker weight and clip the other end of the banana weight to either a flasher or straight to the main line with a barrel swivel.

Then your in like Flint!

I used to use the crossline but now I just use a BB Snap swivel tie the mainline and leader to the barrel loops and let the snap hang down(mainline end) and tie the dropper to the snap stronger and less twist. If I'm in a rocky area I take the stock snap off and put a real small cheap one on they break pretty easy, I keep a couple of pre tied droppers with these snaps so I don't have to tie a knot just snap it on.

When trolling a three-way (or crossline) for halibut, does anybody ever use a leadhead  swimbait instead of a regular sinker? I plan to try that technique this summer.

I used a swimbait for weight before, as long as there isn't too much junk on the bottom to foul your line. But then you can only use one hook above.

Kinda like a combo mooching/trolling rig for salmon

Slider, 18" dropper loop to a 8-12 oz weight. Then on the main line BB swivel, a 6" 30# fluro leader to a single inline flasher, another BBswivel, 4' 20# fluoro to a live bait hook snelled with a treble stinger- loaded up with a tray frozen herring or anchovie.  All trolled at 1.3-2 knots over water.

weight depends on speed-- 10oz seems to keep me ticking on the bottom every 10 yards or so at about 1.5

Hey Tinman,
Stroll on down to Longs Drugs and look for a slidding snell rig and/or the Halibut rig.  It's all set up for you, just run it a foot or so above 4oz of your favorite led sinker.

I hope that helps,

S.
