I have to vent.  :smt013
Gave up my weekend and scheduled days off because of work needs. I am exempt so I don't get overtime. Didn't like it but I was willing to take it but today I come in only to get blasted because I am failing to meet deliverables on projects despite working 12 - 14 hours per day on a routine basis. Deliverables that are based on unrealistic time tables.

My position used to be staffed by 3 people. Now it is just me and I do a lot more than the previous people as I also do application development projects. In the last 6 months we have had a 40% attrition rate in my business unit because people are leaving for more money and less work elsewhere. I have only been the position since November. Once I hit the one year mark I am jumping ship and letting the D@* ship burn and sink.

Nothing personal, its just business.  :smt013

Hi Brian:

I enjoy my Job as a Sr. I.C. Layout Engineer. I have
worked with some Anal  Associates from around the World (Cypress Semi, Sun Mico Etc..).  :smt044
We are all at will, and I generally only give two weeks. I would
line up the Ducks now for future consideration. If your not happy why wait?

 :smt044 I'm laughing because I feel your pain!  :smt005
What you have there is a management problem, which is the case 90%+ of the time. If it helps, just know you are not alone!

Don't feel like you have to wait a year, I hoped around every 8 months for a while. Most people do not hold it against you and the ones that do you probably do not want to work for anyways.

I really enjoy my job...I love fish, always have, and although field days get less and less, I still get to go play outside every once in a while.  My crew is the best part of the gig, solid guys that crank out fantastic product.

Another day at the office...

Sheesh - Sean how is anybody gonna touch that?????  :smt009
Braggart!  :smt044

I am fortunate to have I job I really like. We do many different things, which helps minimize monotony and changing gears between projects keeps the mind busy, too. I like to tell a story of one day's projects which consisted of pouring and finishing a small sidewalk, laying a special area carpet for a play area in a preschool, assembling and installing some cabinets and finally setting up 5 new computers with switch and network cabling for some co-workers. - Rarely bored.

Brian explore becoming a fireman they are one of only two professions I know of that get paid to go to bed.  And in your spare time you can run a landscaping, or general contracting business.

Sure wish I worked for that department,  Usually in a 48 hr shift, I can expect to run 30 plus calls, that would be slow, if on the Medic, closer to 40 or more,

sleep :smt011, sometimes... in dorms with snoring, farts and screams of Terror!!!!

Usually waking up every 45 min. because someone has a tummy ache or the best one ever " I can't Sleep " :smt011,

When it's real like gun and knife play or better yet, Structure fire, that's Kool.... :smt003

Little disgruntled myself right now, just had a 400lb. psycho go nuts on me and screwed up my back which reminds me of what a Kool Job I do have. Reporting to " Light Duty " Monday thru Friday with paper work, Looks like the clock goes in reverse, That is Pain!!!! and I feel for that Gig.

 it's a Love :smt001 Hate :smt013 Thing.......

Fireman is a Good Job, even in my Crazy, Ghetto Town, but if you think it's easy...

 Try it sometime.....

But I'll take Sean's gig in a Heart beat!!! :smt002

I enjoy being an IC designer, my company is a 'by engineers, for engineers' type place that values quirky geeks.  I could tell right away when interviewing here that this was a place I wanted to work.  Other places I was being interviewed by young H1B guys and the told me how there was free sushi at 7pm each night.  Here most of the folk are older - which told me that this is a place that folks with lives and families tended to gravitate to and stay.  It was scary at first because I was given a lot of responsibility for big projects, but the thing about work is that no matter how complex, ect, it is, eventually you learn how to do it and then it's no worse than any other job.  A lot of people look at something and go 'oooh, that's hard!', electrical engineering is certainly up there, but you only have to learn it once and then you're on your way with little competition.

If you hate your job, start looking for another one now.  Call in sick to interview and get out of there as soon as you can.  When you interview and they ask why you're leaving, just say your current group is imploding and you want to get out.  Bailing on a crappy situation isn't a mark against you, it actually shows good judgment, courage and decisiveness if you spin it right.  It's if you can't hold a job for more than a few months that looks bad.  Try not to sound bitter about it though.

When I interviewed I got a book on interviewing and that helped a lot.  It's been a while, but there was probably even a section talking about how to explain why you want to leave your current job and make it sound to your prospective boss like he's got a great opportunity to snatch a quality employee that the competition drove away out of carelessness.

I used to love my job, but I took a promotion and 3 years later I'm really wishing I hadn't. I work for the Forest Service in Public Affairs for Fire and Aviation. I used to go out in the field and escort media on fires, talk with homeowners during prescribed fires, develop/deliver educational campaigns for school groups and camps, and various other creative and field oriented tasks.

Now I sit in a cubicle on Mare Island and write talking points and official responses to Congressional inquiries while delivering "key messages" to state-wide media about exciting topics like firefighter recruiting and retention.   :smt013

I'm definitely keeping an eye out for a lateral back out to the forests where I still wouldn't be as field oriented as i used to be, but at least I would get to actually see the forest occasionally. I figured out that although I'm US Forest Service, I haven't set foot in a national forest in an official capacity for 1 1/2 years.  :smt010

I think we can all relate to the bummer that is a "successful career"  :smt044
