I took the day off to fish there for the opener, but now I might be in court for a work related lawsuit, don't know how long the trial is going to last.  If its over before then I will be there, if not, Saturday the 3rd for sure.

Sounds good to me, count me in and let me know if I can bring anything!  I took wed-friday off  :smt044 hoping to fish the ocean at least twice next week.  Pondering hitting Santa Cruz on Friday or Sat, but think its going to be a bit crowded for my tastes.

Where do you guys live in relation to SWC?  What time you guys plan on launching?

I can't stop thinking about all those stupid rockfish I'm gonna catch! After shorefishing all day for 2/3 rockfish, it'll be great to go out and catch 40 from the yak!

I'm still trying to figure where I'm going for the 1st but SWC sounds good. Is the location considered good for rockfish? What would be the best route from Sacramento? Are you guys using lures or bait? what kind? I can bring food/drinks. I should know for sure where I'm going by Saturday.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

Still Water cove is just south of Monterey located in Pebble Beach . There is A fee at the gate at Pebble which is I think eleven dollars...

MonsterGuppy & Fishmaster1

I am still up in the air about the opener.
It looks like my reno trip that week may be postponed.
If that happens (I hope), I will be in for the opener at stillwater cove with you guys!

Keep you fingers crossed.
I will get in touch with you if it looks like a go.

If not, best of luck to you guys.

Fishmaster

I have a diving friend that says if you are going through Pebble Beach, there is a law granting access to the beach. He told me that they will not charge kayak or divers for access. This was a few years ago, but he thinks it is still an ordinance that says they have to give access and do not charge.

I may be wrong here, God knows it won't be the first or last time.

I will try to check into it.

The gate fee is to gain entrance to 17 Mile Drive.  I've been fishing Stillwater for a few seasons now and have never gotten away with not paying the entrance fee.  I would think that the rangers (?) who collect the fee would have said something at least once if there was an ordinance giving free access to yak'ers/divers...I could be wrong, of course.  I'd hate to think that I've been dropping money all these years for no reason.  I'd recommend asking, but be prepared to pay the fee just in case.

For you first-timers to SWC, please be aware that the parking is limited, and is not right next to the launch.  You can park at the pier side to unload, but don't park in the clubhouse lot itself while you're on the water.  It gets busy there, and they frown upon us eating up their parking space while we're fishing.  (We don't want to piss them off, or they may ban us from using the lot altogether.)  After unloading you can park just outside of the main lot in a smaller lot (20 spaces?) immediately to the left of the exit (on the ocean side).  The first 6 spaces are by reservation, but the rest are first-come, first-served.

I'd join you on opening day, but I have an appointment with a physical therapist for a shoulder impingement injury that I've been waiting to get in to.  If I reschedule it I'll end up waiting a few more weeks... :smt011  I'll be hitting the cove on Saturday or Sunday though!  Leave me a few fish, k?  :smt003

I've been waived through about 10% of the time at the 17 Mile gate, mostly very early in the AM like 0445.  Don't believe the fare collector is a ranger, rather private entity w/o any official police power.

My information or mis-information is from a neighbor who used to take his zodiac there to free dive. He said they used to let them in free because beach access in california is for everybody. However, those days are probably over now, it was a number of years ago.

But I still thought that private ownership of beachfront property is still required to provide public access. That statute doesn't say it is free however.

I am new to the area, so my thoughts are probably useless.
I will grill my neighbor to see where he used to go for free.

Looks like I am going to be able to make it after all.  I am going to try and get there around 7am but you know how that goes.  When I fished there at the end of last season it was $9 to get in PB.  Not sure if it went up to 11 or not so bring your cash.

While it may be true that citizens have a right to the coastline (below mean high tide), it isn't always accessable to the public. Like, if we have to cross over private property to reach said coastline. 17 Mile Dr is a private toll road and we are paying 11 bucks for the right to drive on the street.
Believe me when I say that I have tried every trick in the book. Those toll-collectors have heard it all. The only real way to get in for free [with a kayak on your roof] is to have a resident call the tollbooth (at whichever entrance you will be accessing) and say you are their visitor. However, it is much easier to avoid the fee if there isn't a kayak on your roof; just say you're going to an event at RLS, or dinner at the Tap Room, or shopping, or golfing.
Just my 02. Not saying you shouldn't try to get in for free.
