I'm strongly considering Stillwater Cover for the opener next Thursday.  Anyone interested in truckpooling from the Redwood City area?  I've got room on the rack for an extra yak (Mooch?).

If the weather is dodgy I'll probably skip it though... for now I'm just a fair weather blue water fisherman.

May try Santa Cruz on Saturday the 3rd as I have to be in SC that night for a wedding.

Not saying you shouldn't try to get in for free.

how about not bringing any cash.  I don't believe the kiosks have POS terminals.  When he asks for payment, hand him plastic.  When he tells you he doesn't take plastic, plead with him that's all you have.  Keeping doing so until the queue stacks 4 deep, and I bet you $9.25, he'll waive you through.

So, I plan on being there at first light, which is approx. 6:10 AM.  I'll probably leave San Jose around 4:30AM to make this time, if anyone wants to follow me down to Carmel.  Only been once, but I'll have my NAV which I marked the parking lot on (i think) last time.  If weather is a problem, I will probably just return on Friday instead.  Possibly returning on Sunday again, or heading to SC harbor for a second trip.

If i can get my Wheeleez fixed before then, I plan on just parking on the far right lot, near the bushes, and rolling my stuff the rest of the way to the stairs.  If not, ill do the offload/re-parking shuffle.  But I do recall many people saying they had issues with people on "their side", and just feel like avoiding the hassle.

As far as the MLPA boundary for the Pinnacles, I am unsure if I know exactly where the boundry is.  I have the closure maps, and look at the NOAA charts, and Google Sat. maps, but not sure if I can avoid it by sight.  Going to try playin with my Eagle Cuda 250 GPS to see if I can program in the boundary.  But if not (haven't really played with it), anyone have a normal GPS they can help advise people of the closure points?

Al, the easiest method w/b to mark the boundaries as waypoints. That is the easiest method. I have the boundary drawn into my handheld GPS and I was considering trying to mark the NE and SE corners with bouys or something. The kelp encroaches these two corners so it would be easy to tie a bouy to some kelp in the approx area of the boundary. But I don't want to "litter" by leaving behind two bouys.
Worst-case scenario, I'll go out there and point at some shore landmarks that we can use as the boundaries.
You can always just stay inside the washrocks within the cove, or paddle out around the corner a ways.
Either way, I am not going to be there at 6:10am. I'll try...but....

I'm not able to make the opener due to a medical appointment, but I did manage to get someone to cover my classes at the college on Saturday morning, leaving me free to FISH.  :fishing2

My plan (as of now) is to arrive at Stillwater Cove around 7:00am, driving in from Sunnyvale.  Ch 69 for anyone who wants to join me.

It looks like my crew has finalized plans. We are going to drive down to Carmel tonight and find a close place to sleep. This will allow us to get good parking and get on the water early. Is overnight parking/camping allowed at the launch site? If not what would be the best location to sleep.

I have a F350 long bed with the bed split in two levels. At this point there are three of us so we can sleep in the bed of the truck. We have a fourth that can't make up his mind. If the fourth comes we will we be putting up a tent. Is the gate open 24 hours or is there an opening time?

We will have hot coffee and breakfast. If you let me know you are coming I will have food for you.

If the weather turns unbearable we will probably go to the bay for Butts.

I seriously, seriously doubt it.  Not only is the launch in the midst of all those hoity-toity gazillion dollar Pebble Beach homes, it's right at the golf course club house where the last thing they want to see is a bunch of bleary-eyed guys crawling out of the back of a truck at 6am.  :smt002  I'd recommend crashing at one of the cheap hotels right off of 1 in Marina or Sand City...that'll put you just 10-15 minutes from the launch.  Good luck though!

Man I was loading up tonight and the wind is howling out there.  There are still white caps and large breakers offshore in Monterey Bay.  I am about all loaded up and ready to go.  I plan to leave Seaside 5:30 or 6 and Stillwater is the likely target with the likely wx but if the wind and waves do not settle some tonight I might just go out for breakfast and try again on Saturday.  This morning the wind was up early though it was lighter in the early morning it never really stopped last night.  I hope it dies some, I want to fish.  Ch 69 on the water.

I'm thinking about making my way to the cove on Friday morning. Took off sometime for the opener. I'll be coming from San Jose Friday morning around 4-5am. Never fished this area before and company will be welcomed!  I'll bring the beer!!  I'll be on ch69  :smt006
