Scary indeed but the most pressing question is how is your AI fleet?

Ha ha! Yes, the AI fleet survived intact.

Also it might be a good idea to make use of any helmets or hard hats that you have access to. Might look silly wearing them around the house, but who cares.

The current situation is that the roads are blocked by lots of debris, including downed power lines snaking all over. That means we’re stuck here until PG&E decides to let us out, and they haven’t even assigned a team to it yet. Sp, it looks it’ll be another night here with some forecasts predicting more snow. There’s a lot of snow still on the ground, but it is almost all gone from the trees. Regardless, it would be nice to get outta here tonight…

Sorry to hear about the roof! And all the hours you’d be spending fixing it. Maybe it’s divine intervention to give the halibut a break before the slaying begins

I have the same thing from the new year's storm.I put sheet metal over the holes. I used some silicone and screws to hold it down. It worked great for temporary repair.  No leaks.  Take lots of pictures, save all receipts. Good luck!

I never thought of sheet metal. Did you do something like in this video?

Did you use aluminum? I think I’ll give this a try today, if I can get to Home Depot…

Nice job.  Check local law/ordinance about cutting the tree back that caused the problem to your roof. Most cities will let you do it yourself.  Good luck.

The tree that caused most of the damage is a 200’ Doug fir, and that’s a little beyond my 16” electric chainsaw. It’s also in a bad location and would cost at least $5k to remove…

No way. I’m going to be done with the roof patching today, except for the branch that is stuck in the roof and won’t budge. By tomorrow I’ll have the debris cleared from the road. After that, no mercy on the halibut!

Nowhere man, I used a drip pan , like what goes under a leaky car. I did cut the rolled edges so it could slide up and under the undamaged row above the hole. I put some caulking on the bottom of the sheet and screwed it on. I see no reason to put shingles over the metal. Like the video. It is  working fine until I get around to repairing it properly.

Thanks for the info. I used a roll of sheet aluminum and also did not shingle over the top of the metal. It seems to be working well as it's keeping out the last of the snow-melt. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, and that'll be a better test, as everything should be dried out by then. If there is any doubt, I'll put a tarp over the half of the roof that took 90% of the damage (belt and suspenders approach).

Maybe a door mat can seal the hole in the roof?

Happy to hear you are OK.
some neighbors 2 houses down from us sold their house a few years back after repeated roof piercings by redwood branches.

We got at least 8" of heavy snow, lots of big redwood branches down and a few smaller trees, but relatively little damage.
I had to shovel snow away from our driveway gate to open it on Saturday.
Power was out for 4 days, landline was out for 2. Neighbors were communicating via MURS 2 way radios. Calfire was patrolling, telling the lowland gawkers to go home and stay off the roads.
there was a single car accident 100ft from my driveway Thursday the 23rd, and a 3 car up the road on the 24th.
Thank goodness for woodstoves and honda generators...
