If you guys wanna do a MBF (money between friends) - by all means, do it! After all, this is a put and take fishery - for the trout and catfish at least.

I ask only one favor....PLEASE release all the small mouth bass cause Del Valle is one of the few foothill lakes that have 'em. I truly wish we had more of 'em in the South Bay lakes.

I agree. The small mouth fishery has been diminishing in that lake. I wish the Santa Clara County lakes planted some of those. None of the lakes down here have it.

I haven't caught a smallmouth there in quite a while.  I did catch my biggest smallie ever from the shore right at the Hetch Hetchy campsite a couple years ago. (Don't know the weight, but it was big) Both the LMB and SMB were tearing up the spawning shad right along the shore.

I talked to Jon from Walton's Pond Bait and Tackle yesterday and he said the striper bite at Del Valle is hot.... If you like 14" to 15" fish.  He told me that 2 guys went out the other day and caught something like 70 stripers in the narrows, all undersized.  No keepers.  I bet it was fun though.

OK, I will bring 32 dogs and buns. If people have special eating preferences with regard to hot dogs, let me know. If someone could bring 8 dogs and buns as backup that would be great.

Ben - Joel and I had talked about making this a noncompetitive event so newbies would be less intimidated and we could talk and hang out on the water. Kind of like BH without surf and sharks. However if you and Chuck and others want to have a MFF "on the low" I personally don't care :smt005

That was my experience 2 weeks ago and unlike BAM you don't need live bait. Rapala SR5, kastmasters and small swim baits all worked.

Having never been to Del Valle before, gotta ask the question:

Is this campsite set up where you kayak in or do you leave the kayaks at the launch ramp/parking lot and walk back and forth to the campsite?

Hey Sumo.  John Walton is the man to talk to regarding Del Valle.  I'm fortunate to live close to his shop.  If he says striper bite is hot we should believe it.  That's good news for us.

To this day, the biggest striper I've ever seen was caught at Del Valle.  It looked around 40 pounds and was caught and released at the launch ramp within a half hour after they stocked a bunch of trout into the lake.  I guess those big stripers know the schedule for trout planting.  :smt003

Ditto that.  Few years ago, I saw a picture of a huge striper that was caught at DV.  The bait shop kept its head in the freezer just for kicks.  It was large.

I'm not a bass guy, but maybe big plugs (i.e. castaic, or MS Slammer) would be good this week, if they've recently planted trout.

Western Outdoor News said they just planted 4000 lbs of trout last week. Hope they last awhile.

I also like the idea of it being a noncompetitive event.  After BAM, I just wanna chill, eat, drink, socialize, and sleep-in.  I'm so sleep deprived.  It all good though if others wanna have their own MBF on the side. :smt003

Either, Or.    goolge Lake del Valle and then click on the group/hetchy-hetchy. it's about a mile from the park lot.

You can paddle to the site or you can walk to the site. You park the kayaks next to the camp site.

from the boat launch (there is only one) there is a trail that leads to Hetch Hetchy. They have maps availble at the gate - just ask for one - it's free.

The campsite is right next to the water.
