After doing some brief research, it sounds like the aircraft needs to be within 4 miles and in your line of sight? Seems like a cool toy, but I'll stick with my dye packs & flares for now.

I would caution anyone posting on using Ham Radios for Marine and FRS bands on a public forum. While it can be done, they don't come that way stock out of the box for a reason. Google is your friend...
