Nice. $250 on Amazon. I read it recieved aircraft frequencies. It would be great if it could transmit also. I heard aircraft frequencies are the best for getting rescue help on land or water.

$239.95 at Ham Radio Outlet!

I get numerous frequencies...
$229 thru the end of feburary, plus free shipping. Transmitting on aircraft frequencies is something I would like to have.

But then you will have to pay $50 to make it "Happy"... when you buy it locally, they make it "Happy" for free for there good customers....

LOL, I just picked up a FT1D for it's built in APRS capability. I'm surprised you haven't got into that too...

I saw and played with that one too... almost, but it wasnt waterproof or submersible.

but I do like the GPS and SD card feature, as well as a few others; this is probably next on my list... just need to sell my FT270 radio first....

For the cost of a pilots license & an airplane, you too could transmit on faa channels.
My understanding is anyone can use a radio to transmit to aircraft for emergency rescue using omething like the Yaesu FTA-230 Air Band Transceiver.

"All aircraft; private planes, helicopters, commercial airline jets, US Military, Coast Guard, Police Aircraft All monitor 121.5Mhz Guard!  If you are in the woods, on a raft or in the mountains and you hear an airplane, you can get this radio out and talk to them INSTANTLY and tell them where you are."

That radio is sitting at the bottom of Lake Berryessa :smt005; accidentally kicked it over-board when fighting a cookie-cutter :smt003

These 3 radio have no problems with communicating with the general population; unless its user error :smt011

When you think about it,

- VHF Waterproof Radio = $130
- FRS/GMRS Radio = $95
- 2 Meter Handheld Radio = $180

It's really not that bad at $280 OTD....

No, not when you put it that way! And they made it look like a normal size, not like some of the GPS radios i've seen.  And I do want to get a ham license some day...

Do you have to put your call sign on your yak now too?  :smt044

It's an added measure of security when we go off-roading in the back country, there's always a way to contact someone; just gotta find a tower to bounce off of...

Also, in the event of an emergency or natural disaster (like the last major earthquake), 2-way  radios are will be the most reliable form of communication when cell towers and landlines go down...
