If you're tired of reading a thread, don't read it anymore. Simple.

I'm trying to come up with a witty , tactful respsone , unfortunately I'm not witty and I lack tact so I guess all I can say is like everyone else I'm voicing my opinion if you don't agree with it that's fine and find it interesting you would need to point out the obvious..... Must have touched a nerve ,anyway thanks  for deflating my attempt at levity.Respectfully ,Vic
No nerve touched, Vic.

I think we can all agree that Yakhopper is a great guy.

James "Stormscrambler" is just as put off  about this post as me.

First off if you are really curious about why FW does something, why not PM Eric?  No, you choose to post a question on a public forum that will show FW in a bad light.  Now knowing that Eric bases his livelihood on this company why single it out?  How about every mom and pop convenience store or liquor store that also sells bait and tackle?  What about Wally World, Big 5, Hi's, Bass Pro and on and on.  What about their ethics?  I know it is all because he is a Dodger fan!

See Vic, it wasn't over.

I had the same thoughts but just didn't post.  This will not keep me from buying from them and it was good to hear the responses about shipping out of state and such which I had not considered.  There was nothing said that would keep customers from going there so the ones who responded with passion is not going to cause business loss and if it did those are customers you are better off not having.

I also like the fact that business response was that we tell customers what to use based on area they are fishing.  That's great if you buy your own stuff.  If someone buys a gift or my wife bought because she was in the area and I asked her to pick it up that's where a sticker or note about Ca restrictions would help.

Public forum or not.  Someone must have been shopping at the store to mention them specifically. Isn't that a good thing and addressing their concern should not turn bad.

You are missing the point.  Maybe because you were not able to attend a "Yakhopper" event you don't understand.
A moderator on this site called out a business that is the livelihood of one of our, let's say "more revered" members.  Why not do this privately?  A better post would have been to do something Like Hojo does with his DFG posts.   For instance, " Should a tackle shop that sells tackle that is currently illegal to use be held liable for any Fish and Wildlife fines that a customer might incurr?"

Then we might have had a great discussion on this forum.  Singeling out one store, the store that has supported many events for NCKA, and putting Eric on the defense is bad form.

No I have not attended one.  Also have no idea who just loves to kayak and fish and who own businesses here.  I thought it was a valid question and saw nothing wrong with asking it.  But do see both sides of this so if I come across something in the future that I can address directly with the owner of a business I will try that.

Even some really negative posts I have read on this forum turned out good with business owners who gave a crap.  Situations that sounded awful but when a business owner saw the post and then took steps to fix it.  Man, in this day and age that is like gold for me.  I would do business with them anytime.  So just having something out in the public is not a bad thing.  How you respond to it makes all the difference.

" Should a tackle shop that sells tackle that is currently illegal to use be held liable for any Fish and Wildlife fines that a customer might incurr?"  Agreed that would be better.  But also wouldn't the response to this at the beginning be better if the response was we try to tell all our customers what items are illegal in ca, but also ship outside of the state and want fisherman to have as many choices as possible.   That would have been a closed post, the end.

Do all of you guys read directions on everything you buy. I know the rules for what I'm fishing for and don't read the package. All I can say about this thread is, "IT MUST BE WINTER". So now we have a bitch session. Until rock fish and Salmon open!  :smt009

First, I think this discussion is not about FW or Eric. Both have been very supportive of our community. Personally I would not have brought this topic up but it is a valid discussion. It is about the sale of a product which is marketed to catch a species where it isn't actually legal to use it. Inevitably it if the anglers responsibility to know the regs but the question is whether it is misleading advertising.

I searched the regs of 8 states and couldn't find one where a 2 barbed J hook rig is legal for sturgeon in 2014. Many states have moved to single barbless circle hooks. One state did not allow hooks at all, only spears through holes in the ice.  :smt005 I could find no other business selling 2 hook sturgeon rigs. Those are the facts as far as the research which I did for what it is worth.

Well,
here we are, several pages later .... Go figure ... in December no less.
First off, let me apologize for coming out swinging. I took offense to what I believe to be a public bashing towards my place of business which I have given my adult life to.
In my eyes, it was a shot intended to discredit the company I have become a major part of. I will agree that I may have been a bit over the top. And unfortunately,  the emotion added to the end is what pushed it.
I understand that none of the other companies have these available. Please understand that most shops buy from wholesalers,  we do not, we buy direct. The other guys buy in dozen quantity, when something is a standard for as long as many of you have been alive, we buy in bulk. We do this to lock in prices, help struggling companies and also so you can have what you need when you need it. When the rules changeand you already own thousands of dollars in product, all you can do is discount or find a new market.
There are many places where the world can improve, point is, when most people walk into a store, the either know what to buy, or they ask for assistance. I for one know the rules and what to get, if my wife was going to get me some tackle, she would defiantly ask for assistance, at which point, she would be told what is legal. The last thing any legitimate retailer wants to do is sell you the wrong gear and have you upset and wanting a refund.
Again, I am truly sorry for your feeling deceived, that was never the intent of Fisherman's Warehouse.
Some feel that it was a fair question and that I read to much into the emotion, yet your response in fact says you "DID" intend to bash. Being the person I am, I will assume that was a typo, and apologize again for my anger at the beginning of this thread.
Sorry to have misled any California Sturgeon anglers who did not know the rules, or any angler whose friend/spouse/parents/children/associates/? who may have picked up this gear by mistake.

Happy Holidays,

Eric / Yakhopper
