When I was growing up in southern California the cheapest item on the restaurant menu was abalone. It was cheaper than chicken. Originally most of the abalone taken by the commercial fishermen ended up in pet food. Not all that unlike "calamari" that was a bait when it was "squid".

"Fish" though is too general and it depends upon fresh or frozen as to taste. Fresh salmon or tuna is very different in flavor from frozen or canned. And then there is the farmed fish which I do not consider fit for human consumption.

I never read that about abalone being used a pet food--do you have any references?

Sorry about not defining the term "fish" enough.  I meant the fish we normally catch......Should I list them by species?  :smt044
