Dave....you need to step up your culinary game brother, there's more to life than fried abs.

Dude, I'm such a culinary dufus I'd buy Human Chow if they sold it at the grocery store.  Just fill up your bowl when you feed the dog.

I do like ab sashimi and ab ceviche...I forgot about that.

I'm with Jim too, I like shooting fish more than grabbing abs....but I still like to get them too.  Although I passed on shooting a couple of lings yesterday.  To bad you can't shoot and release.
you can"shoot and release"calwild calls it waste of game fish [emoji23]

I love abalone. Although Ive been eating it for most of my life. I get tired of it. In fact I haven't been ab diving in over three years because I just don't care anymore. More intriguing than the dive or the recipe and eating is the hope for a big pearl.

So when ChuckE is deep frying fresh fish and the sweet chili sauce is out, gang the fuck way! :smt003

Yeah Craig, I never heard that either--and I'm old.  It's funny as hell though.

Yep, we need to expand this list some.   For me, rock scallop sashimi is as good as it gets.  I like abalone, but it isn't that high on the seafood totem pole for me.

Its just "gang way" with a touch of Turrets thrown in.

Heres a good recipe.

Abalone steaks sliced horizontally (Dave)
 Grated Monterey Jack cheese
 Italians seasoned bread crumbs.
Chopped green chiles.
 Butter ( from Sonoma County)

Mix the grated cheese and the diced chiles together. Coat both sides of the steaks with the bread crumbs. Fill the steaks with the mixture and roll them up. Place a toothpick in them to stay rolled up. Place all the steaks in a baking dish. Put a pat of butter on each piece and cover with grated cheese. Cover and bake for 25 minutes at 350. Take off the foil and bake for another 5 minutes or till the cheese gets bubbly and slightly browned. Its pretty rich and your farts will drive the old lady to her mothers for days. Its a win-win. :smt003 :smt003 :smt006

Anyone that puts egg or a dairy product on an Abalone should be committed.  Just my opinion :smt009

I had ab for dinner tonight, but we too get tired of it.  I prefer fried lingcod.  Halibut is very good and probably a step above ling, and that thresher is a step above that!

Grabbing an ab is a wonderful experience, and shooting a fish is too.  They both have their challenges, but Big Jim has shown us in many videos that the art of the fish hunt does seem to surpass that of the abalone in many ways.

A combination of hunting fish by pole and spear and hunting abalone by diving and picking, combined with a commitment to eating a fair amount of either that you kill and bring home - this is what I will continue to aspire to.

I like it both equally.
I've found that people who don't dive definitely get more pumped up when you offer abs over fish.
Guess I'm spoiled.

By far the hardest thing seafood wise I ever had to do was scallops with my grandfather and uncle back in Rhode Island. I think I was 15 or 16, we dredged up 4-5 bushels of scallops, then we had to clean and shuck them.  After that I never complained of paying for scallops agains in my life.

I have never dove for abs, but my uncle has out here and still does at 70.  I treasure theones he shares with us, more so for his skill and tenacity to keep doing it.  My cousin is a chef so the things are done right.

That said there is a fish shack back in Rhode Island that makes fish cakes with a fillet of haddock, and slices of potatoe on each side, dipped in batter, then deep fried, served in newspaper the old.  You add malt vinegar, and salt and pepper, and you are in Yankee Heaven.

Their link on FB gives you an idea of what kind of old place it is:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stadium-Fish-Chip/115672698456285

My mouth is salivating thinking of thier stuff!

So yeah fish over Abs!
