So I thought this would be interesting.  My personal feeling is that abalone is super overrated.  Maybe I'm just biased by the fact that I'm always the person that cleans them, pounds them, prepares them, and figures out what to do with the stinky guts.

Anyway, I'd much rather eat fish.  I love catching abalone--it's like a giant underwater Easter egg hunt, but man, I hate to admit this, but if there's a neighbor or friend around who will clean them themselves, I give them most of my catch.

I was at a company picnic the other day where a couple of us coworkers went out and got limits, and I pounded and prepared them all--what a crap-load of work.  That day I also shot a couple of Lings and I got to say the fresh, deep-fried Ling Cod was way tastier to me than the abalone.  Maybe I was just prejudiced by the splattered abalone goop all over my shirt from pounding 9 abalone  :smt005

Teach a man to fish. Might as well teach them to clean abs.  I don't usually take more than one ab at a time so never overwhelmed.

As for taste.  I like them but love the hunt.  Wife loves them and refuses to hunt.  So I get to be the provider at least in this situation.  I like lings and cabs more than I do abs but to much of anything makes me not want it when it comes to seafood.  Variety is best.

I voted for fish...even though I LOVE ab sashimi....  :smt007

I think hunting and shooting fish is way more fun than hunting for abs...but that's just me!  :smt001

BBQd abalone skewers and ab ceviche are pretty awesome, but there is a lot of labor involved. Fish is good or great, depending on the species, but it can get old, too. Variety is key for both.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Ab sashimi is delicious but not worth risking life over.  I enjoy it when it's offered, but prefer fish.

That, for which you have to work, always yields the sweetest rewards.

Abs= 6 hours of driving, usually involves scaling some type of rocky cliffs, hauling a ton of gear, getting beat up by surf, plus, even though its really not that hard, only a handful of people on this planet are able to get em.  That and its always gratifying bobbing around in the water and looking back on shore where all the rock pickers are neck deep in slime cuttin their arms up on barnales for the few abs they are able to reach.

Fish= any kook with a license can pay to jump abaord a party boat, get sick and lay down in the cabin all day and walk off with a bag full of cod.

Dave....you need to step up your culinary game brother, there's more to life than fried abs.  I haven't pounded an ab since the first limit I took.

That pretty much captures my feelings, cept I haven't shot a fish in years, the feeling has also cut way down on my ab take.

Im the opposite. I like to eat abs but I give away most of my fish.I rather deal with ab guts than scales everywhere. I don't pound my abs.I use a very thin sharp knife and I slice the ab super thin. Abbing is fun but I like to shoot fish.shooting fish is a little harder than poping abs off
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Dude, I'm such a culinary dufus I'd buy Human Chow if they sold it at the grocery store.  Just fill up your bowl when you feed the dog.

I do like ab sashimi and ab ceviche...I forgot about that.

I'm with Jim too, I like shooting fish more than grabbing abs....but I still like to get them too.  Although I passed on shooting a couple of lings yesterday.  To bad you can't shoot and release.
