Yep, we need to expand this list some.   For me, rock scallop sashimi is as good as it gets.  I like abalone, but it isn't that high on the seafood totem pole for me.

Rock Scallops sashimi is about as good as it gets. I don't think any scallops made it to the beach....we ate em up on the dive boards on the water....

I actually like eating market squid more than abalone.  I made some squid chowder from recipes I got from the NY times--good stuff, specially the Thai chowders. You could do that with abalone too I guess.

If anyone ever wants to trade my fish for your abs I always have rockfish and lingcod. Live on Tahoe.

Isn't "trading" abalone illegal???

Not if you gift it and don't know if the recipient will coincidently gift you something.

But seriously if someone wasn't aware you can't sell, trade or receive something of value for abalone or the shell.

I don't think he dives. So I wouldn't expect him to know the complicated ab regs.

It's not just an ab reg. you can't sell or trade any sport fish or part thereof taken under authority of a sport fishing license and it's been that way for a long time. I got a warning for trying to trade roe from a salmon I caught on the Trinity in the mid '90s.

Is it illegal to get together and cook it all? I am not really interested in trading raw fish because yes it's illegal. Figured people would know that on here. Guess I'll have to be more clear next time.

Yes. It's the quid pro quo that is the problem.

Quid pro quo means its contingent on both parties bringing whatever it is.... So cooking fish with someone is only illegal if it is contingent on both parties bringing fish. Seems a little hairy to me but I guess it makes sense.

Only one party needs to supply the fish.

In the normal NCKA event situation there is never an expectation of a thing for a thing - it might be billed as a potluck/fishfry/Jedmo nation feeding an army, but if you didn't bring a thing you wouldn't go away hungry. That's totally fine.

When I was growing up in southern California the cheapest item on the restaurant menu was abalone. It was cheaper than chicken. Originally most of the abalone taken by the commercial fishermen ended up in pet food. Not all that unlike "calamari" that was a bait when it was "squid".

"Fish" though is too general and it depends upon fresh or frozen as to taste. Fresh salmon or tuna is very different in flavor from frozen or canned. And then there is the farmed fish which I do not consider fit for human consumption.

This is a very good point
