We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

People aren’t supposed to look back. I’m certainly not going to do it anymore.”

I have not seen many halibut in person, and it was mostly underwater as I shot these pics- but-to me-that thing looked huge!!!

I've always enjoyed the Kayak connection derby cause i get to see a lot of the familiar faces that I fish with
throughout the summer.  The key word for this derby, for me, was "LUCK!" and lots of it.

1) Pat (Cen Coast) got sideline due to illness  :smt010
2) I got a hailmary salmon in 60ft of water.
3) Fishcomb (Tony), mishap with his trophy halibut
4) Eugene's unwilling to make salmon leaders  :smt005

I was stoked to participate in this tournament. I had fun in the past and look forward to another great year.
I got a chance to look at the forecast the night before and saw a big south swell move through. I knew the fishing was going to be tough all around.

Arrived at Aldos at 5:30 a.m. and ran into smokeinthewater. We chatted it up and soon made our way to the water.
I didn't mark any bait out front like I did last week so decide to go to the mile buoy and work the reefs. It was slow picking so I decided to move towards the lighthouse.

As i moved past SC4 I was marking bait. I was able to pull some good sized chovies and threw them into the live well.
I took my bait and made my way towards shallow water as I trooched an anchovy near the bottom.

As I got closer, I saw a ledge and marked some bait moving over it. Right then, my pole goes TAP TAP TAP. I thought for sure it was probably a Crocker messing with my anchovy, but it looked a little different. I slowly took my pole out of the holder and reeled in line. As my hook set itself, I felt the familiar salmon shakes. SALMON?? I was confused but as the fish surfaced I saw chrome!! SALMON!!! and FISH ON!

I got it to the surface and then it made the Salmon Dash, LEFT, RIGHT, OUT and under my boat. I let it tire out and when it was ready, I came in for an easy net job.  At that moment another salmon jump right next to my boat TWICE!! and belly flopped. wow??! how random.

After landing my salmon I saw Tony (FISHCOMB) Dash towards us in his hobie. At the rate he was moving, I thought he had rockets on his yak. He dropped a live chovy down the bottom and needless to say what happened next.

Weighed my fish in and found out I was the winner when BIGJIM crushed my hand with his signature handshake!! OUCH!
Saw all the familiar faces and had a blast. Of course, the big winner was the salmon and trout project! We raised 2k for a great cause.  Thanks again for Kayak Connection for putting on this tournament. They are great people with a good heart for our community. Support them and buy local guys. - Keith

Want to thank Kayak Connection for hosting an outstanding tournament and allowing me to exchange my second place prize for a longer Werner paddle.  Also want to thank Mike Sapp and his friend Jim for allowing my brother and myself to tag along with them.  And a special thanks to Bloodbath.

Congratulations Keith on the nice chrome catch and your first place finish.  For myself I heard that the bite was going to be slow and that some salmon were being caught and so I decided to concentrate only on salmon.  Mike, Jim, and I followed a commercial boat for an hour or two with no action.  Mike wanted to go in shallower and try for some rock/butt and I told him I would follow him in and would continue to troll for salmon.  That was a good decision for me as I hooked up and landed my salmon in about 80 feet of water.

Overall it was a great day on the water fishing with friends.

Big shout out and thanks to Dave, Jessica, Kayak Connection and Joe for hosting a great local event. Sorry "the Goz" and I were late arriving and missed everyone and the awards; we where a little late getting off the water. We launched at o-dark thirty with Ron and Teri and headed out about 1.5-2mi/120' and then trolled up to N-bridges and then hung around south rock reef. Unfortunately, we never landed anything worthy except for Teri who scored a nice salmon for his first time out in local waters and secured a solid second place to add to his long list of fishing accomplishments!
Congrats to all of the winners, it was a tough day out there.....Looking forward to next year :smt006

Big thanks to Dave and Jessica for reviving the KC Derby, great turnout---too bad the bite wasn't better. And $2000 to the MB Salmon/Trout project=Awesome!
The swell is gone, and it was flat out there this morning, so the bite should be back on. Going to give it a go tomorrow.
Congrats to Keith, Terry and Ryan….. way to go guys.
