the trick to a Victor snap trap is to wipe the bait BENEATH the trigger.  peanut butter, or BETTER  YET  a piece of Snicker candy bar.  the nugate (how do you spell Nugat?) sticks so well.  even sticking it to the wood beneath the trigger is good.  you have to get the rat to focus on jamming his nose underneath the trigger bar..so keep it JUSSST out of reach.

but honestly if i had a rat problem i would buy, the GoodNature trap that hits them in the head with a metal bar, like the thing that kills cattle.   then set up a goPro camera for the carnage.
