I've been getting mussels in Pebble Beach since the start of the year during low tide (King Tides). There is a resident that has called SECURITY on me and verbally harassed me twice stating that what I was doing was illegal. Security stopped me and asked if i had mussels in my backpack and if I had a license. I said it was legal to harvest there 365 days a year. 10 lb limit. He said he was just responding to a call and let me continue on. I went there again last week and the same female came over and told me it was illegal and called SECURITY again. This time the guard drove by and watched at a distance as the woman continued to harass me for taking mussels. She even went as far as to say ASIANS were coming by the busload and doing the same. I was shocked! I tried to show her the map of legal areas and even the regulations for taking them but she said that that was only my opinion and that she would call F&G who she said she had on "speed dial". I said i would wait, please call, she said she would later.  Long story short, I called Fish and Game. The warden said what I was doing WAS legal and the there was a 2009 law the made her actions illegal and he would look at the Pebble Beach security logs and find out who she was and educate her of the law. I'm sure i'm not the only one this has happened to but if you do go there and anyone tries to stop you or threatens to call Security or F&G please report them, this can't continue! F. Warden Doug Wall will be glad to help protect us from being verbally threatened and hassled by this citizen and private security.  Just a tip...

WOW! That resident must be Karen. Thank God I don't like harvesting mussels in nearby residences. Good call on filling in the warden and next time even security asks for a license or anything of your personal info. Please don't give them any.

It would be best if you let me know your next trip; I will be happy to accompany you and document her complaints.
We might be able to file a formal complaint for racial harassment.

If I was closer I’d definitely join you.  This sounds like the best winter thread material we’ve had in years. Please video the next encounter and bring along someone who isn’t particularly nice to idiots.  I think we had an earlier winter thread where those members were identified.

Security guards have no authority to ask for your fishing license nor look inside your bag. Should tell them to walk down the beach and pound sand next time.

Wow that sucks. I go to a spot further down the coast a few times a year to collect mussels. Next time I will go to fan shell beach. Do you park in the fan shell beach parking area and go to the right or left? I want to make sure I'm in the right spot. And, I'll wear my GoPro hat  :smt002

Bring your camera next time and record  :smt006

A few months back my family got harassed by two individuals while harvesting mussels.  When I came back and was told of the incident, I went directly to said individuals and spit out the facts. His wife went running and dude almost shit his pants  :smt044 Wish I had a camera.

Keep on musseling brother, just keep that camera ready

That’s my neighborhood.  I poke pole & fish along the stretch from Fan Shell to Pt Joe regularly.  On flat days in season, I’ll launch my SUP off of Fan Shell beach & head offshore for rockfish. I’ve only been hassled one time in over 25 years, but I do know that many locals think PB is inside the Marine Life Protection Area.  PM me next time you’re in town & I’ll try to join you.

Oh, and by the way, I’ve NEVER seen busloads of people coming in to take mussels.  I have chased away a couple of guys who were taking abalone & had F&G bust a crew who were mowing down limpets & snails.  4 people got caught with over 600 snails & 400 limpets.  That wasn’t cheap.

The first time this woman (a Karen) :smt005 accused us of taking mussels illegally, we told her it was legal and we had a license. Her male friend waited at our car and and proceeded to harass us until I told him we were leaving. Karen, said her name was Susan, called security and said i was getting violent because i raised my voice when she wouldn't listen to me. (Karen) chose to climb over the fence and down the ice plant to confront us. The mussels are easy to get at low tide. I think she has a house nearby and confronts anyone she sees collecting mussels. Call Fish and Game and report her. A camera with photo of her car would be helpful also.

This might be a good hookup for all fellow asians. Show up there on a yellow bus and start collecting mussels. Karen would lose her mind! Saturday is a minus tide. Just saying  :smt044

dang, sorry to hear that happened to you. She sounds like a real nut job.  I'd like to join you sometime. Love mussels, but have only caught them to use as bait...I need to learn the ropes on catching them to eat.  I'll bring a go pro, just in case we meet your lady friend. ;)

I made the mistake of harvesting too large ones.  They are way fishier than the smaller ones.  I'm gonna stick to the 3-4 "... :smt006
