Hi everyone. Just want to introduce myself. My name is Jacob and I'm looking for some possible buddies to go kayak spearfishing in Santa Cruz or Monterey. I just got a scupper classic and have been wanting to test It out.  If anyone is available let me know.

Spearfishing in the ocean is open year round, thanks to Randy Fry (RIP).
Shore fishing is open as well, year round.

The upside of Spearfishing is that it’s year round. Down side is we only get so many dive  days when the weather is good.

Just curious, how thick of a wetsuit and how much weight do you wear when you free dive?

Typically 7mm open-cell wetsuit with 12-20 lbs weight based on the person's body shape and wetsuit thickness.

This may be my next hobby to get into. Although certified many decades ago, I think I would be free diving. How deep do you need to go? I've only held breath to 30'.

Thanks!

I recently got most of my gear, but I think I would be more of a hinderance at this point.  I haven’t picked up a spear yet.  But, if you’re open to just have a spotter snorkeling at the surface in case you black out, I’m totally up to join you some time.

I plan to take a free diving course this spring. Once I take the course I would like to join you and see what it is all about.

Thank you for your great offer.
Since they closed the abalone seasons, I lost interest in freedive and changed to kayak fishing.  I have not done any freediving for the last four years and am unsure if I will return to freediving unless they open abalone season again.
Taking a lesson from PFI or FFI is a great way to learn safe freediving, and you need a buddy to dive with.  Also, practicing in a deep pool is a great way to learn duct dive and relaxation, with a buddy.
I might be selling some of my spearguns soon.
Good luck.

Hey Paul, there is always SoCal for Spiny Lobster too - free divers out perform the kayakers.

Thanks!

Hi Brian

I have been hoop-netting lobsters with my wife for several years.  It has been slow for the last two years, but three years ago, we got 88 lobsters between the two of us.

If you're a beginner forget  the spear.
Start by getting relaxed and comfortable swimming/floating/diving in the ocean, get used to your gear (wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins) and get weighted right.  Practice your breath-ups and duck dives, stay at the depth you're comfortable with,  do not push your limits.
Enjoy!

I know, but the divers always do better (it seems) and can choose the lobster they want :)  anyway, just a thought of a reason to keep diving.
