If you're a beginner forget  the spear.
Start by getting relaxed and comfortable swimming/floating/diving in the ocean, get used to your gear (wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins) and get weighted right.  Practice your breath-ups and duck dives, stay at the depth you're comfortable with,  do not push your limits.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice.  It’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for many years, but I also know it’s not safe to do solo.   Finding a wingman has been the hardest part.

Hey Paul, there is always SoCal for Spiny Lobster too - free divers out perform the kayakers.

Hi Brian

I have been hoop-netting lobsters with my wife for several years.  It has been slow for the last two years, but three years ago, we got 88 lobsters between the two of us.

Heading out to Catalina and doing night dives for lobster has been on my bucket list for a long time.

I'd be happy to show a new guy The ropes. Better to dive with someone than nobody at all, and  As long as you don't mind 5ft viz in  sc you should be ok.

Hey there waters, I am interested in your post, I am a scuba diver, new to bot free diving and kayak fishing. I am looking for buddies to get out on the kayak and do some fishing and free diving, let's talk if you are still interested, looking for a good season on and under the water, Ron.

I got the whole setup from Mako last Christmas, but only just got around to taking a level 1 class down in Monterrey last week. With the short RF season and no salmon this year, I'm going to try to get into it this season, if I can figure out how to Frenzel and find some buddies. I'm up in Sonoma County, but would be happy to drive down as far as SC/Monterrey area to get out in the water.

So as soon as you reach 10 posts, you can actually post your own hookups and view the members only sections.  You are almost there, just make a few more posts and a whole new world is gonna open up  :smt002

Also, posting your name and phone number and email on a public forum might just be inviting a lot of robocalls or spam.  Have people direct message you for your contact info.

A buddy and I will be in Monterey this next week, starting 4/19 to 4/22, We will stay at a campground KOA Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay north of Moss Beach. If conditions look good and you want to go that weekend, let us know. I am new to freediving, experienced scuba diver, my buddy is from Hawaii and is experienced at freediving and spearfishing. Where do you dive in Santa Cruz area, interested in learning spots to go. I will let my Buddy/Steve know you may go this weekend, he may be interested, I am working this weekend, Good luck, Ron.

If you are staying towards moss landing I would recommend diving in Monterey. The water clarity is much better and is usually better protected from swell. Sadly I won't be around this tie  during your weekend trip, but i would recommend trying still water cove or carmel beach. Best of luck out there.

I live in Santa Cruz I have basically everything I need to dive. I haven’t dove in a few years, but I would love to get back into it. I’m actually going kayak fishing tomorrow off the point hoping to get some halibut, before rockfish season opens.
