Hey, Danglin,

'Cuz I can't figure out how to insert pix into a PM, I've attached them here for you. Acid Wrap3 and Acid Wrap Pano2 will probably be the most helpful when you zoom in on them. Good luck!

Erik Kunz makes  a lot of rods that way.  I love mine and it has been one lucky SOB! of a rod.

From what I understand it's all about how the blank bends. EK explains it best: http://www.kzreelrods.com/science.html#Spiral%20Placement

Very quickly... the advantages of a properly wrapped acid rod are:

1.  Inherent stability.  There is zero torque on the rod or guides when flexed.  All of the forces are straight up and down.  This is very noticeable on heavier rods and long rods with a moderate action.

2.  Less overall weight and lighter and more sensitive tip.  Sensitivity is a function of the stiffness to weight ratio of a rod.  Generally you can use smaller and lighter framed guides because of both the setup and because there is no side-to-side stress on the guides, so lighter frames will do.  Likewise, because you aren't concerned with the line hitting the blank when the rod is flexed, you can generally use one less guide in the tip section.  This makes a noticeable difference in tip sensitivity.

There is no reduction in casting distance with acid wrapped rods and really no disadvantage to the setup at all.  Basically the setup allows you to eek out a tad more performance out of any rod.  I have built them for everything from ultralight trolling rods to musky rods to deep jigging rods to surf rods to offshore tuna rods, etc...  The concept works well with every conventional rod application I've built so far.  I'll personally never build another conventional rod for my own use.

Erik, would acid wrapped rods make it any EASIER to flyline live bait on 40 pound test? On my tuna trips, I'm normally reluctant to use my 40 pound rig because I can't get the bait more than 4 or five yard without a serious bird's nest in the line.

Proper rod wraps conventional or acid won't make as much difference as a better reel set up will. A lighter spool(less mass) will start up and slow down faster for more casting distance. Also hotrodding like Alan Tani does, better bearings and replacing thick grease with light oil helps too. The venerable lightweight Newells are being replaced on more jig casting rods.(but those light plastic spools really spin) The Trinidads, Saltigas and other smaller lighter reels with large spectra capacity and some with built in cast braking are working well.
Casting a light bait far is really a skill. Watching the deckies toss a sardine a mile with any old rig proves that. Making the time and effort to get an educated thumb is hard to do.(speaking from experience :smt002)

Hojoman... what Shimmy said.  Acid wrap does not enhance casting ability, but it does not hinder it either.

Danglin... here are a couple pics of the guide setup from more of the angle that you had requested.  Hope it helps.

One more Danglin... you can see in this picture how, when the rod is flexed the line only hits the bottom or top of any individual guide.  Testing the rod under stress like this should be done to confirm and tweak your guide placement.

Not sure what danglin is up to here, but after KZ made me a spiral wrap rod I found an advantage related to his comment about the lack of twist or torque forces on the rod.

when trooching, or even trolling a little faster with some weight down there, the rod is stable and the reel stays upright since the line is pulling down on the guides from the bottom.

also, the long foregrip he put on for floatation cushions the rod when trooching.

so basically the best trooching rods on the planet have long foregrips, and spiral wrap guide placement.

Best,
John
