I have a Whole new level of Respect for the work you do with Fishing Rods :notworthy:...

I must have retied the first guide @ least a dozen times and I'm sure it will be tied a dozen more before

 I'm through......

Really learning much about fishing rods and thanks so Much for the " Paint by Number "

set up. Even so, there is definitely a steep learning curve here!!!! :smt002

Suggest anyone to try this, time consuming but fun....

 Thanks KZ :smt006...

Maybe have it done before BAM 4 ..... :smt003 ........

BTW... Where do you get the threads, or are they just normal sewing thread?......

Thanks .........  Danglin

Way to go Danglin... glad to see you're hanging in there.  Don't worry about it being perfect... it never will be.  I like the setup... expecially the Bowie knife.

The thread is nylon and is designed for rodbuilding.  Most sewing thread will present a host of issues ranging from being waxed to UV fading to leaving nubs, etc.  There are some that will work, but you need to know what to look for.

Keep it up... if you mess up, you can always cut the guides off and do them again.

Glad to see you perservering... look forward to seeing it at BAM.

PM me if you need help. I build all my rods. You can buy supplies at the Rod Rack at Hayward. I have the drying motors and other things that make it a lot easier. I don't acid wrap mainly because the theoretical advantages are unproven and my wife is an ex-dead head.  :smt005

There are some good online sources for the thread, but a lot of tackle shops in socal-not the chains-have thread.  I made my drying motor out of an old rotisserie motor, a 1.5" pvc pipe cap and some thumbscrews.  Instead of a box I made 3 jigs out of scrap plywood and lined the spots that come in contact with the rod with the fuzzy side of velcro.  Advantage is that you can place them as needed to adequately & evenly support the rod no matter where you are working on it.

Building your own is time consuming, but you can do something "fishing related" when you have half an hour to play in the garage.  And it's really cool to catch something on a stick you built yourself.
