Here is another good one... The most popular youtuber... FML...

At 12:00 in this video he explains that after salmon on board, can't use barbed hook any more, and he even said it "let's pinched down the barb"...  and here you go.

In another recent video he kept a hook and line sea cucumber, which I don't think that is legal either.

If you go through FML videos, there are plenty more examples...  Off the top of my head, one video where he is shorefishing, and keeping fish in a small tidepool puddle as a makeshift livewell until he can catch larger fish and "safely release" the ones he has already legally retained...  Another vid, he retains a female dungee and chucks it into his boat because fishing is slow.  Later on when he shows his catch for the day, he has clearly high-graded to a limit of males, and the female he kept and chucked into the boat earlier isn't shown or mentioned.

im pretty sure you're allowed to play musical chairs with crabs as long as you're only taking your limit.  you cant keep like 30 then sort them, but if you have 10 and then pull up your last trap and it's got one huge crab, i don't think its illegal to throw a still alive and well smaller on back and keep the big one.... not sure, though the party boats do it.   you technically cant even open the trap up to dump it out without putting it on your vessel and being "in possession" of them..

No. High grading is illegal.
https://californiaoutdoors.wordpress.com/2011/01/21/cherry-picking-the-best-crabs/
Thats an interesting one. Looks like it's NOT illegal, just specifically overposession while doing it is the issue. you can do it if you're never over your limit, but based on their explanation it presents a new issue...

the example they use is egregious, keeping 30 crabs to dump 20, but the implication from it seems youre required to keep the next legal ones on board until you hit 10 total.  Now im not sure to what degree high grading / cherry picking is defined, because its not in the regs at all either.

If my first pot has 9 crabs and my next has 10, which one of those last 10 crabs am I allowed to keep? as explained in the article, it seems like its the first to hit the deck. if i look for the biggest in that pot im also high grading by this explanation though, as all of the 19 crabs are in my possession at the time of making my decision of which last 1 to keep regardless if its even a high-grade crab or not...   you're forced into this definition of overposession by processing gear with any bias at all.   Spirit of the law is something to consider

I was about to call someone out on a video for fishing for salmon after they had got a limit.  But then read the regulations and it seemed to me it was worded in a way that actually supported high-grading.  Decided I had enough of them anyway and no longer subscribe.

But it's important to remember we are all humans and make mistakes.  Even FML realizes it sometimes and then puts out another video.  There are plenty of times I've made a mistake, but didn't share it but I learned from it.  I don't think that they should all be put into one bucket and judged either.  It would be great to hear from YT's that want to share their side, but of course reading this why would they want to?.

Sometimes they will even address the mistake and show contrition.
It would be better to own up to the mistake and show you are as human as anyone else.  At least to me that is still good content, they shouldn't dismiss it since it's not a prize because it is an experience.
If he had made the error, apologized, taken the video down and used the experience to change his ways moving forward ... all good.

I hadn't heard of this Youtuber before, so after reading this thread, I went to see his channel to see if the latest vid being spoken of today was on there.  I'm in no way defending his actions, but more just ensuring we are all looking at all pieces of the puzzle.  It appears he may have (albeit late) written an apology and made an attempt to right the wrong.  Does it excuse the actions? Of course not, but it might indicate that he wants to right the wrong to the best of his abilities.

Hi everyone,

Two weeks ago, I posted a video of my first time salmon fishing in the ocean. In the video, I failed to identify a Coho/ Silver salmon, and mistook it for a King/ Chinook salmon. I uploaded the video and then, realizing my mistake, took it down, edited it, and re-uploaded it in hopes of still being able to share my first time catching a salmon.

I fear some people may have interpreted malicious intent from my actions, but I promise that although I made a grave mistake, doing so was never my intention. If I had known the salmon was a coho and not a king, I would have released it immediately. I understand that as a fisherman, it is my responsibility to be able to identify fish species and be informed on the legal policies regarding keeping them, and promise to do better in that regard. I will not make the same mistake again.

I want you all to know that I am still learning (a ton). My fishing and fishing practices are by no means perfect, but the more experience I get and the more I learn, the better my practices will become. I fish to immerse myself in nature and experience it not just as an observer, but as an interacting part of it. Nature is one of the most important aspects of my life and person, and I would never knowingly damage an ecosystem, in fact, I want to restore nature. In college, I am majoring in Environmental Biology to then go into conservation, which has been my lifelong passion.

I hope reading this can give you some context behind my actions, and I want all of you to know I am working and will continue working on becoming better informed and always implementing the best fishing practices I can.

To give back, I am signing up for an ongoing $10 monthly donation to SPAWN, an organization dedicated to protecting the native Coho salmon population in the Lagunitas Creek Water Shed -- from Mt. Tamalpais to Tomales Bay (link below).

I appreciate everyone's understanding and empathy,

Ilan

That's really cool, appreciate you posting that Tedski!  I frankly didn't know there was a forum-ish thing on YT where you could do that sort of thing.  I think his response was great and seems very well meaning.
