First off I apologize if I was negligent in responding to an email from you. If I am in town I am usually pretty good at getting back to people. I do get a lot of junk email and have been guilty of accidentally deleting the wrong things.

Jim,

No apology needed nor expected Jim. Email gets lost all the time. My thoughts were that something along the same lines was likely to happen again, for legitimate reasons, so why go down that road again?

Scott/Joel,

I don't really feel like doing the "what makes a perfect kayak" thing in open forums any longer. It's been less than two months since I was told by people that cockpit accessible rod storage for 7' one piece rods wasn't needed. That I should be using two piece rods instead, or that I should stop being silly as rods and reels are waterproof. I'll provide a link to the conversation if you want. I'm more than happy to discuss my thoughts with a representative of OK/Necky/JO, but the last thing I need is someone from the UK or Florida or La Jolla telling me that what works for them should work for me. Jim himself doesn't believe that the strong demand here in NorCal for the T160 twin hatch is indicative of a market trend. Maybe he's correct, but I have a solution that would give folks choices and make for a stronger accessory market for JO.

Regards,
Scott

Not sure who whould say that at least not anyone in the know at OK because at that point the Trident was a done deal, with the rod pod which I can put an 8' rod in.

Again a big issue is trying to make a kayak that is marketable all over the country, there will always be compromises.
The Scupper Pro two hatch went away for a reason, it just didn't sell againt the TW the same could be said for the Tarpon 160, its sales did not go up until they got rid of the two hatch and went to the TW.

We are working on some ideas to address this and I would love to hear your ideas.

This was Simon from the UK, in a thread regarding the Kaskazi Marlin. He suggested I buy proper rods. This was well post Trident announcement. Other folks in other threads have chimed with comments on reels being waterproof.

I believe that you're on the right track, if you are thinking about how to resolve regional needs in a modular manner. I just ask that you consider that one of these needs is the ability to fully utilize the rear of the kayak for storage. I can justify the purchase of an expensive dual purpose touring/fishing kayak, but not a single purpose, fishing only hull.

Scott

A touring / fishing kayak would be the ultimate  :smt007 I do have a Tarpon 160 with the rear hatch and this particular kayak is almost there  :smt045 Still, the original P15 is still on top of my list as an "all around". A rod pod on the P15 would be nice to see in the future  :smt002

just my 2 cents...

Looking forward to seeing the future of kayak fishing  :smt004

The more I look at the Necky in the vvid, the more I think about just putting in a couple of flushmounts and learning to roll...not kidding.  Beauty of a boat.

I agree and will be staying with my P15 although the Trident without the sonar compartment would be better than a P15 with a rod pod particularly for big guys.

As an owner of 3 OK kayaks, I really appreciate their interest in customer feedback and the Trident is a testimony to the fact that they listen.

Who did OK listen to for the sonar shield?

Earlier, I mentioned I wouldn't pay more than $2000 for a fishing kayak.... but if they ever make a super cool, screaming fast, indestructible, sub-40# fishing kayak .... I'm sure I'd pay 2 grand and maybe a little more.

If WS would have kept the same exact design as the old school 160 with the exception of carving out a tank well in the rear in place of the hatch I think they would have had the best fishing kayak around.
They tweaked the design a little and changed the front hatch enough for me not to like it.

I'm in complete agreement. While we're dreaming, make it with a tough composite layup as an option, with weight at 50# as a goal.

The old rigid hatch was huge. The new soft oval, not so good. I understand the change was made to simplify production and conform with the hatch used for the newer and smaller Tarpons.

Once upon a time, I read a post from someone that said they actually had two old T160s that WS had made for him in composite. Internet Legend, possibly. But seriously, how cool would that be?

Scott

I'm constantly telling myself that I've got more money than sense. I'm certainly not alone in that regards. So I don't find the $$$ issue to be the part of the story that is implausible. I just wonder about the acrobatics that would be needed to use a rotomold as your female for a composite boat. And whether or not a kayak manufacturer could be enticed to do this, for any amount of $$$.

On another note: Too bad about the road closure last night. Some other time, I guess.
