I'm a guy w/a nearly maxed out PTO and need to burn some. Still can't believe that we don't have to go to socal and it's mid november too.

Lol. Gonna use it for crab bait? Gave it to my brother in-law's father and he said it was hella rich.

My new company is shut down next week and I have only been fishing once this year. Anyone interested in joining next week? I promise to chum the waters! Just gotta make arrangements with my wife for childcare.

Damn, shoulda used the pick gaff on the more manageable fish!

TGIF at the fingers today and marked a huge wolf pack immediately. I made a u-turn to try to stay near them and as I went over the pack again, the deep rod started twitching. Then the fly lined rod moved a little. The weighed rod started screaming after the deep rod took off. I reeled in the fly line rod and the bait was missing so it got picked up, but didn't stick. I then set aside the weighted rod and good thing the fish was going in the other direction.

I'm usually more patient than this and I tried to horse in the deep rod. I don't think that was the issue, but I kept trying to rush it when gaffing instead of taking my time, since the 2nd rod was still tight and that fish wasn't going anywhere. I recently converted a 18/0 hook into a flying gaff and it works well with bigger fish because once it's in, they can thrash all they want as you easily sink in the 2nd gaff. They're usually more worn out so there's an opportunity to sink it in as they pass by. My favorite one is the pick gaff because of how thick their head is and it's hard to penetrate with just one hand, but with the pick, throw it down as hard as you can and it's game over. The mistake was to use the flying gaff instead of the pick gaff and the first one came off after a few showing at the boat where you could reach down and touch it. darn, first time one came off within reach and I was about to switch gaffs on the next pass. The first one was at gaff length in 11 minutes and was still a little hot 😅

GD that was awesome!  Double hookup!?  By yourself?!  DANG son that's one hell of an experience to say the least!  Cringing at the gaffing flops, but cheering for ya landing that beauty.  How you also film it all is beyond me!  Thanks for doing that Hai and sharing with us the experience!  You rock dude!

Thanks. Put the gopro on your hat and all you have to do is press the button. Been lazy to run the other cameras - plus, spending the time might your chances of bringing it in.

2 problems with the first fish. I rushed it and at the end, hesitated about where to gaff it (toro is important lol vs just sink the hook anywhere) and the 2nd part was I didn't realized it was so close because of the dark topside and reeled in.. basically hook to rod tip at that point and the only way out of that is freespool.
