Shark Shield

I saw a few hookup reports mentioning Shark Shield. What shark shield kayakers use? I see Ocean Guardian has many different models, for diving, surfing, boating. Just not sure which one is best for kayaking. Also, does it need to be submerged in the water to be effective like fish finder transducer? Or does it work anywhere on the kayak?
Appreciate any information or testimony whether it worths the money.

The Freedom 7 seems like the model that most kayakers use around here. I have the "tail" of it submerged in water. Haven't had any encounters yet, so assume it's working. If peace of mind matters to you, it's worth the money.

Thanks for the quick reply. Freedom7 is what I have been looking. Just not sure if that’s the right model.

Its been 4 years since I bought mine. Freedom 7 Havent seen one. I fished on a shark infested place. I used to at least have encounter 2-3x per season. Though, I’ve been in some groups that had encounters.

I'm using a freedom 7. I put a short leash on it so I don't lose my $500 insurance policy.
The unit needs water around it to function properly, the colder the better.
I run the lead cable through a scupper hole and the battery pack sits in the inch or so of water on the deck.
I've had one encounter while running it and as far as I can tell it worked, spooking the shark away.

just remember to turn the unit off when you land, otherwise you'll have to get zapped a few times to turn it off when the kayak is wet.

Haven't seen one the entire time i've been kayaking, but the number of sightings and the places I frequent makes it worth it IMHO.

It happens to me last Saturday. I pull it up and coiling it just dropped it quickly as I felt the zap. Omar was laughing asking me what happened. I fuck I forgot its on

Based on the site, "Operating Temperature Between 12C – 40C (53.6F – 104F) Lower temperatures will reduce the operating time" So it seems like colder may not be better

That might be a mistake. Most sources seem to agree that dawn and dusk are most likely times for an attack.

Interesting. Mine last between 6-7 hours. I turn it on before I launch.

Mine originally lasted 6+ hours, but eventually dwindled to 4.5, and seems to have finally given up the ghost. I’ve had it since 2011, so I think I got my money’s worth…

I feel better thinking that I would be able to turn it on rather than having it dead. Nothing worse than having the soon to die warning beeps start up. Spent a long day on the water at Shelter Cove and it died right at 4.5 hours. Since new it hasn't lasted more than 5. Maybe I should get another one.

Would love to have a chance if someone ditching their old SS because of the battery dying

Someone should really figure out how to wire one up to a battery.  Game changer!
