I'm using a freedom 7. I put a short leash on it so I don't lose my $500 insurance policy.
The unit needs water around it to function properly, the colder the better.
I run the lead cable through a scupper hole and the battery pack sits in the inch or so of water on the deck.
I've had one encounter while running it and as far as I can tell it worked, spooking the shark away.

just remember to turn the unit off when you land, otherwise you'll have to get zapped a few times to turn it off when the kayak is wet.

Based on the site, "Operating Temperature Between 12C – 40C (53.6F – 104F) Lower temperatures will reduce the operating time" So it seems like colder may not be better

Someone should really figure out how to wire one up to a battery.  Game changer!

I agree. I might give it a try since my battery is dying and it’s not replaceable.

I wrote to the company and asked them to make a kayak specific one with a larger battery, or the ability to attach an outside power source. They responded that the Freedom 7, designed for divers, was fine for kayaks. I wonder if their patent is up? Probably not a large enough market for someone to do some reverse engineering.

Anyone know anything about the SharkBanz 2? Seems to be a more affordable option to the shark shield. Although it seems they only make the ankle bracelets, I think you could hang one or a couple off the side of the boat?

Australian eBay sells battery replacement for SharkShield as well.  But would imagine connecting it to an external source should not be a problem given that we can find the battery that provides the proper voltage.

Dont waste your money on this. It was my first option when I was searching for a shark deterrent options. After some encounters. But if search enough you’ll find it dont work at all.

Thats awesome! Now I dont need to worry too much. If only we can swap them easily when on the water to have spare battery.

Seems like another side gig for Chet -- maybe when he triples the battery life he can increase the output so that it works like a stun gun on the sharks :-)

Cheers,
Brad

Right!  Find a way to make the protective range like 100 yards.  Sure, it would fry your ass if you touch it, but it would take only a few to wipe a whole spot clean of sharks!   :smt044

Would it work to make a pigtail to connect an external battery to the charging poles?

Not sure if the circuitry excludes operation while charging.
